Christian V Of Denmark
Christian V (15 April 1646 25 August 1699) was king of Denmark and Norway from 1670 until his death in 1699. Well-regarded by the common people, he was the first king anointed at Frederiksborg Castle chapel as absolute monarch since the decree that institutionalized the supremacy of the king in Denmark-Norway. Christian fortified the absolutist system against the aristocracy by accelerating his father's practice of allowing both Holstein nobles and Danish and Norwegian commoners into state service. As king, he wanted to show his power as absolute monarch through architecture, and dreamed of a Danish Versailles. He was the first to use the 1671 Throne Chair of Denmark, partly made for this purpose. His motto was: ''Pietate et Justitia'' (With piety and justice). Royal Pawn (Denmark)
The Royal Pawn (Danish: Det Kongelige Assistenshus) was a pawnbroking establishment which existed from 1688 to 1975 in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was created at private initiative but was taken over by the state in 1758. Its former building at Nybrogade 2 was expanded by Philip de Lange in 1762. It is now home to the Ministry of Culture. The building was listed on the Danish registry of protected buildings and places in 1918. History Early history Assistenshuset was created at the initiative of the merchant Nicolai Wesling. He applied to the Danish Chancellery for a royal privilege to operate a pawnbroking establishment with inspiration from abroad. On 3 August 1688, Christian V issued a royal ordinance for the establishment of an "Assistance House". Wesling's pawn shop was located in a building at the corner of Nyhavn and Kvæsthusgade. Jacob Benzon
Jacob Benzon (31 October 1688 – 25 November 1775) was a Danish nobleman, civil servant and Governor-general of Norway. Benzon's career began as a court junker at the Royal Danish Cavalry Academy in Copenhagen 1704–06. He held various state positions in Copenhagen 1715–1726. In 1726 he became a amtmann of Trondheim in Norway, and from 1730 to 1737 he held the same position in Oslo. He was then amtmann of Aarhus from 1740, Vice-Governor of Copenhagen 1747–50 and was from 1750 Vice- Governor-general of Norway. After Charles of Hesse had been the titular Governor-general of Norway for four years (1766–70) without residing in Norway, Benzon was appointed to Governor-general on 26 January 1770, a position he held for only one year. He was deposed on 8 February 1771, leaving the position vacant until 1809. Peder Hansen Resen
Peder Hansen Resen (17 June 1625 – 1 June 1688) was the Danish historian, legal scholar and the president's residence in the city. He was the son of Bishop Hans Hansen Resen. Youth and education After private tuition, he was in 1641 placed in the Vor Frue Skole, where he in 1643 passed to the university. In 1645 he took theological certificate (teologisk attestats) and spent a year at the Vor Frue Skole. Then in May 1647, accompanied by Rasmus Bartholin, he set off on a trip abroad, first to The Netherlands where Resen made a four-year stay in Leiden, and concentrated on philology and jurisprudence. There he met up in 1651 with his three brothers, of whom Elias was drowned on an excursion to Amsterdam. Soon after that, Resen traveled to France and spent several months in Paris. He went on to Orléans, undertook a journey with Corfitz Trolle and his steward Conrad Hesse through France and Spain. Nicolai Esmit
Nicolai Esmit (also called Nicolay or Nicholas and Schmidt) was governor of St. Thomas in the Danish West Indies from 4 July 1680 - November 1682. He was born in Holstein. His younger brother Adolph Esmit succeeded him as governor of St. Thomas.Bricka, Biografisk, 599 Biography According to Dansk Biografisk Lexikon, Esmit served under England on Jamaica after finishing school. In 1678, he and his brother were issued deeds for land they owned in St. Thomas. Esmit was the only applicant to the position of governor after Jørgen Iversen Dyppel's wish for retirement on 9 September 1679 and was instated on the latter's official retirement on 4 July 1680. Sophie Amalie Lindenov, Baroness of Lindenborg (4 July 1649 – 4 August 1688) was a Danish noblewoman and landowner. She was Baroness of Lindenborg and the owner of Lindenborg Castle. Biography Lindenov was born at Kalundborg Castle ('' Kalundborg Slot'') on Zealand, Denmark. Her parents were Hans Lindenov, a nobleman of Bavarian origins who had been made a Knight of the Order of the Elephant in 1648 and was a member of the Danish Council of State, and Countess Elisabeth Augusta af Schleswig-Holstein, a morganatic daughter of King Christian IV of Denmark and Kirsten Munk. In 1674 she married nobleman Claus Daa (1640-1678) owner of the estates Krengerup and Brahesholm on Funen. Their only child, a son named Hans after his maternal grandfather, was born in Aalborg on 5 December 1677.
