Kirsten Madsdatter (died 1629) was King Christian IV of Denmark Christian IV (12 April 1577 – 28 February 1648) was King of Denmark and Norway and Duke of Holstein and Schleswig from 1588 until his death in 1648. His reign of 59 years, 330 days is the longest of Danish monarchs and Scandinavian monar ...'s lover, and the mother of one of his three acknowledged, illegitimate sons, Christian Ulrik Gyldenløve. Kirsten Madsdatter was likely the daughter of Copenhagen's mayor Matthias Hansen, though this is unconfirmed. She was originally a chambermaid to Queen Anna Catherine. The relationship started before the death of the queen; their son was born in 1611. In 1612, the queen died. In 1612, Kirsten was married to Reinholt Hansen , who eventually took over as Mayor of Copenhagen after the death of Matthias Hansen. Caspar Bartholin the Elder (; 12 February 1585 – 13 July 1629) was a Danish physician, scientist and theologian. Biography Caspar Berthelsen Bartholin was born at Malmö, Malmø, Denmark (modern Sweden). His precocity was extraordinary; at three years of age he was able to read, and in his thirteenth year he composed Greek language, Greek and Latin language, Latin orations and delivered them in public. When he was about eighteen he went to the University of Copenhagen and afterwards studied at University of Rostock, Rostock and university of Wittenberg, Wittenberg. He then travelled through Germany, the Netherlands, England, France and Italy, and was received with marked respect at the different universities he visited. In 1613 he was chosen professor of medicine in the University of Copenhagen and filled that office for eleven years, when, falling into a dangerous illness, he made a vow that if he should recover he would apply himself solely to the study of divinity. Dorothea Elisabeth of Schleswig-Holstein (1 September 1629 – 18 March 1687) was the daughter of king Christian IV of Denmark and Kirsten Munk. As were her siblings, she was raised by her grandmother Ellen Marsvin. She was known as ''Miss leftover'', as the king did not recognize her as his child, believing her to be the daughter of Otto Louis of Salm. Marsvin tried to have her recognized, but failed, and in 1637, she was sent to Hamburg and then to a convent school in Cologne. Bornholm
Bornholm () is a Danish island in the Baltic Sea, to the east of the rest of Denmark, south of Sweden, northeast of Germany and north of Poland. Strategically located, Bornholm has been fought over for centuries. It has usually been ruled by Denmark, but also by Sweden and by Lübeck. The ruin of Hammershus, at the northwestern tip of the island, is the largest medieval fortress in northern Europe, testament to the importance of its location. Bornholm and Ertholmene comprise the last remaining Danish territory in Skåneland east of Øresund, having been surrendered to Sweden in 1658, but regained by Denmark in 1660 after a local revolt. The island is known as ("sunshine island") because of its weather and ("rock island") because of its geology, which consists of granite, except along the southern coast. Christian IV (12 April 1577 – 28 February 1648) was King of Denmark and Norway and Duke of Holstein and Schleswig from 1588 until his death in 1648. His reign of 59 years, 330 days is the longest of Danish monarchs and Scandinavian monarchies. A member of the House of Oldenburg, Christian began his personal rule of Denmark in 1596 at the age of 19. He is remembered as one of the most popular, ambitious, and proactive Danish kings, having initiated many reforms and projects. Christian IV obtained for his kingdom a level of stability and wealth that was virtually unmatched elsewhere in Europe. He engaged Denmark in numerous wars, most notably the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), which devastated much of Germany, undermined the Danish economy, and cost Denmark some of its conquered territories.
