15 Medium Regiment (India)
15 Medium Regiment is part of the Regiment of Artillery of the Indian Army. Formation and history The regiment was raised on 14 May 1956 with a nucleus of troops from the 15 Dogra Regiment, which itself had been raised after the partition on 15 July 1948 from Dogra companies from 1/ 16 Punjab, 2 Frontier Force and 3 Frontier Force, 4th Division of 13 Frontier Force Rifles and the 2nd, 3rd and 5th Baluch Regiments. It thus became the first Dogra field regiment of the Regiment of Artillery. The new unit was raised outside Golconda Fort, Hyderabad as 15 Field Regiment. The first commanding officer was Lieutenant Colonel M G Luxa. The unit was initially equipped with 25-pounder guns and received its first consignment of twelve guns on 9 August 1956. Sino-Indian War
The Sino-Indian War took place between China and India from October to November 1962, as a major flare-up of the Sino-Indian border dispute. There had been a series of violent border skirmishes between the two countries after the 1959 Tibetan uprising, when India granted asylum to the Dalai Lama. Chinese military action grew increasingly aggressive after India rejected proposed Chinese diplomatic settlements throughout 1960–1962, with China re-commencing previously-banned "forward patrols" in Ladakh after 30 April 1962. Amidst the Cuban Missile Crisis, China abandoned all attempts towards a peaceful resolution on 20 October 1962, invading disputed territory along the border in Ladakh and across the McMahon Line in the northeastern frontier. Kargil War
The Kargil War, also known as the Kargil conflict, was fought between India and Pakistan from May to July 1999 in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir and elsewhere along the Line of Control (LoC). Sena Medal
The Sena Medal is awarded to members of the Indian army, of all ranks, "for such individual acts of exceptional devotion to duty or courage as have special significance for the Army." Awards may be made posthumously and a bar is authorized for subsequent awards of the Sena Medal. It can be awarded for gallantry or it can also be for distinguished service carried out by any soldier, not in the face of the enemy. Therefore, the Sena Medal also serves as a sort of general commendation medal for the Indian Army. From 1 February 1999, the central government set a monthly stipend of Rs. 250 for recipients of the award when it is awarded for bravery. It has since been revised to Rs. 2000. Punjab Regiment (India)
The Punjab Regiment is the second oldest regiments still in service in the Indian Army, and is the most senior regional infantry regiment. It was formed from the 2nd Punjab Regiment of the British Indian Army in 1947 and has taken part in various battles and wars since, winning numerous honours for the same. Prior to Indian independence movement, independence and Partition of India, partition there were a number of "Punjab Regiments" in the British Indian Army. These were amalgamated to form six regiments: the 1st Punjab Regiment, the 2nd Punjab Regiment, the 8th Punjab Regiment, the 14th Punjab Regiment, the 15th Punjab Regiment and the 16th Punjab Regiment. Shingo River
The Shingo River is a tributary of the Indus River, and flows through Gilgit-Baltistan and Kargil district, Kargil regions. In the Kashmiri terminology, the Shingo river joins the Dras River, which in turns joins the Suru River (Indus), Suru River. In the Balti terminology, the Shingo River runs all the way to the Indus River, and the other rivers are its tributaries. Course The river originates in the Deosai National Park, Chhota Deosai plains in the Astore District, north of Minimarg, and flows east. The Shigar River, which originates in the Deosai National Park, Bara Deosai Plateau to the north, also flows east and joins the Shingo River before it enters the Indian-administered Kargil district near Dalunang. 11th Gorkha Rifles
The 11 Gorkha Rifles is a Gorkha regiment of the Indian Army that was re-raised after independence. The regiment consists of primarily the Kirant Tribes Rai, Limbu, Yakkha, Sunuwar of Eastern Nepal, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Dooars of West Bengal, Sikkim and other parts of Northeast India. Though it is considered to be the youngest of the Gorkha regiments its lineage is as long as those of the 7th Gurkha Rifles and 10th Gurkha Rifles.
