Radio Broadcasting
Radio broadcasting is transmission of audio (sound), sometimes with related metadata, by radio waves to radio receivers belonging to a public audience. In terrestrial radio broadcasting the radio waves are broadcast by a land-based radio station, while in satellite radio the radio waves are broadcast by a satellite in Earth orbit. To receive the content the listener must have a broadcast radio receiver (''radio''). Stations are often affiliated with a radio network which provides content in a common radio format, either in broadcast syndication or simulcast or both. CBNO-FM
CBN (640 kHz) is a public AM radio station in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It carries a news, talk and information format and is the local Radio One station of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. CBN is powered at 10,000 watts, and is a Class A station broadcasting on a clear-channel frequency, shared with KFI in Los Angeles, the dominant station on 640 AM. CBN uses a non-directional antenna located off Thorburn Road near Exit 44 of the Outer Ring Road on the Trans-Canada Highway. With its non-directional signal and low dial frequency, CBN can be heard by day around most of Southeastern Newfoundland. At night, it can be picked up across much of the eastern half of North America with a good radio, but is strongest in Atlantic Canada and Eastern Quebec. CKNX is a Canadian radio station, which broadcasts at 920 AM in Wingham, Ontario. The station broadcasts a classic country music & news format. CKNX is also an affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays radio network. History Launch The station was originally launched in 1926 as an informal broadcasting experiment by local businessmaW. T. Cruickshank who aired live and unscripted programming provided by customers of his repair shop. In its original incarnation, the station was simply known as Joke, but proved so popular that Cruickshank applied for an amateur broadcasting license and the station formally became 10BP by 1930. CJQM-FM (''Country 104.3'') is an FM radio station in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The station is owned and operated by Rogers Sports & Media and broadcasts a country format. With 100,000 watts power, CJQM's signal is one of the strongest in the Sault Ste. Marie area, and can be heard northward to Montreal River and southward to Mackinaw City, Michigan and at times to Gaylord. History The station was launched on May 13, 1965 as CKCY-FM by Algonquin Broadcasting, the owners of the city's CKCY-AM. In 1976, both stations were acquired by Huron Broadcasting, who also launched CKCY-TV in 1978. Huron subsequently sold the radio stations to a new business consortium, CKCY 920 Ltd., in 1985. CHGO-FM is a Canadian radio station, which broadcasts at 104.3 FM in Val-d'Or, Quebec. Owned and operated by Arsenal Media, the station airs an active rock format branded as Capitale Rock. It also shares much of its programming with CJGO-FM in La Sarre, although the two stations each produce their own separate morning programs. The radio station originally began as CKVD 900, an AM station that was part of the Abitibi AM network since 1939 with CHAD Amos (now defunct) and CKRN Rouyn-Noranda (now CHOA-FM), until it was converted to FM in 1999. CHFA-FM is a Canadian radio station, which broadcasts the programming of Radio-Canada's Ici Radio-Canada Première network in Edmonton, Alberta. The station was launched in 1949 by a local non-profit consortium to bring French radio service to Edmonton, and was directly acquired by the network in 1974. The station serves the entire province of Alberta from its studios in Edmonton, although it also maintains a smaller bureau in Calgary. For most of its history, the station broadcast at 680 AM.
