103 The Eye is a community radio station serving Melton Mowbray and the Vale of Belvoir in the East Midlands of England. It takes its name from the River Eye which flows through Melton Mowbray. Background "103 The Eye" was the first community radio station in the United Kingdom to begin broadcasting on a full five-year licence granted by Ofcom. Fifteen other stations had previously held short-term licences under the pilot scheme (originally titled "Access Radio"), but The Eye was the first station to go on air after the format was opened to general applications. Melton Mowbray () is a town in Leicestershire, England, north-east of Leicester, and south-east of Nottingham. It lies on the River Eye, known below Melton as the Wreake. The town had a population 27,670 in 2019. It was released as a single from their third album of the same name and was also the theme song for the 1982 film ''Rocky III'', which was released a day before the single. The song was written by Survivor guitarist Frankie Sullivan and keyboardist Jim Peterik, and it was recorded at the request of ''Rocky III'' star, writer, and director Sylvester Stallone, after Queen denied him permission to use " Another One Bites the Dust", the song Stallone intended as the ''Rocky III'' theme. The version of the song that appears in the film is the demo version of the song. The film version also contained tiger growls, which did not appear on the album version. Showaddywaddy
Showaddywaddy are a rock and roll group from Leicester, England. They specialise in revivals of hit songs from the 1950s and early 1960s, while also issuing original material. Showaddywaddy spent 209 weeks on the UK Singles Chart, and had 10 Top Ten singles, with one reaching number one. Formation The band was formed in 1973 by the amalgamation of two groups, Choise and the Golden Hammers, the latter often known simply as The Hammers. They both played at the Fosse Way pub in Leicester and soon discovered shared musical tastes. After playing together in jamming sessions, they joined together permanently and Showaddywaddy was born. This led to an eight-member band, with the unusual feature of having two vocalists, two drummers, two guitarists, and two bassists. Hickling Pastures
Hickling is a village in the Rushcliffe borough of Nottinghamshire, England. It is located close to the border with Leicestershire, approximately northwest of Melton Mowbray; the Vale of Belvoir is also nearby. It has a population of around 550, measured at 511 in the 2011 Census. The disused Grantham Canal passes through the village and there is a large basin adjacent to the main road. This would have facilitated loading and mooring when the canal was in use. The basin now attracts a substantial population of swans and ducks. Plans to put the canal back to water include the building of a swing bridge on the main road through the village. Like many bridges along the canal the original one has been flattened and therefore presently prevents navigation of the cut. Extent and geology The vale is a tract of low ground rising east-north-east, with a somewhat ill-defined area.
