1st Maine Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment
The 1st Maine Veteran Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 1st Maine Veteran Infantry was organized in Charleston, Virginia August 21, 1864, by consolidation of the 5th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment, 5th Maine Infantry, 6th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment, 6th Maine Infantry, and 7th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment, 7th Maine Infantry. The regiment was attached to 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, VI Corps (Union Army), VI Corps, Union Army of the Shenandoah, Army of the Shenandoah and Army of the Potomac, to June 1865. American Civil War

As a fervently abolitionist and strongly Republican state, Maine contributed a higher proportion of its citizens to the Union armies than any other, as well as supplying money, equipment and stores. No land battles were fought in Maine. The only episode was the Battle of Portland Harbor (1863) that saw a Confederate raiding party thwarted in its attempt to capture a revenue cutter. Thomas Worcester Hyde (January 16, 1841 – December 14, 1899) was an American Union Army colonel, a state senator from Maine, and the founder of the Bath Iron Works, one of the major shipyards in the United States. He wrote two books about his experiences during the American Civil War and at the Battle of Gettysburg. The Army of the Potomac was the principal Union Army in the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War. It was created in July 1861 shortly after the First Battle of Bull Run and was disbanded in June 1865 following the surrender of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia in April. The 7th Maine Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It participated in most of the campaigns and battles of the Army of the Potomac in the Eastern Theater. Service The 7th Maine was organized at Augusta, Maine, and mustered into Federal service for a three-year enlistment on August 21, 1861. After organization and training, the regiment left the state for Baltimore, Maryland, on August 23. Subsequently, it was attached to Dix's Division and assigned to duty in the city until October 25, 1861. The 7th was then assigned to Davidson's Brigade, W. F.
