1999 Singaporean Presidential Election
The 1999 Singaporean presidential election was held to elect the next President of Singapore with S. R. Nathan as the winning candidate in an uncontested election. He was the only candidate that was granted an eligibility certificate to contest in the 1999 presidential election. Candidates The Presidential Elections Committee declared S. R. Nathan (formerly known as Sellapan Ramanathan) to be the only eligible presidential candidate to be issued a Certificate of Eligibility. Nathan was successfully nominated on 18 August and was inaugurated as the sixth President of Singapore on 1 September 1999. An independent or non-partisan politician is a politician not affiliated with any political party or bureaucratic association. Ong Teng Cheong
Ong Teng Cheong ( zh, c=王鼎昌, p=Wáng Dǐngchāng; 22 January 1936 – 8 February 2002) was a Singaporean politician who served as the fifth president of Singapore between 1993 and 1999. He was also the first elected president in Singapore's history. He decided not to run for a second term as president in 1999 partially due to the death of his wife. A former member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP) and Ong served as Chairman of the People's Action Party between 1981 and 1993, after Toh Chin Chye stepped down from the position. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kim Keat SMC between 1972 and 1991, and Toa Payoh GRC between 1991 and 1993. The Presidential Elections Committee was set up by the Government of Singapore to ensure that each candidate running for the office of President of Singapore has the qualifications needed — referred in Article 19 of the Constitution of Singapore. Sellapan Ramanathan
Sellapan Ramanathan (; 3 July 1924 – 22 August 2016),. often known as S. R. Nathan, was a Singaporean politician who served as the sixth president of Singapore between 1999 and 2011. He was also the longest-serving president in Singapore's history. He announced that he would not seek for a third term in office. Nathan contested in the 1999 presidential election and won by an uncontested walkover. He was re-elected as president after winning the 2005 presidential election uncontested again. In 2009, Nathan surpassed Benjamin Sheares to become Singapore's longest-serving president. Nathan was reportedly considering for a re-election and decided not to run. Nathan suffered a stroke on 31 July 2016 and was taken to Singapore General Hospital before he died in the hospital on 22 August 2016, at the age of 92. Stephen Ooi Boon Ewe (; born 14 November 1941) is a Singaporean politician and a perennial candidate. He is most notable for attempting to contest various elections, general and presidential, without a record of success. He attempted to contest presidential elections in 1999, 2005, 2011 and 2017. However, in each instance his application for the Certificate of Eligibility was rejected, due to reasons such as not finding assentors to sponsor him, and incomplete nomination forms. Life Ooi was reportedly a former private tutor and property executive. Politics Ooi entered the political arena in the presidential elections in 1999. Presidential elections in Singapore, in which the President of Singapore is directly elected by popular vote, were introduced through amendments to the Constitution of Singapore in 1991. Potential candidates for office must meet stringent qualifications set out in the Constitution. Certificates of eligibility are issued by the Presidential Elections Committee (PEC).
