The Democratic Progressive Party ( abbreviation: DPP) is a political party in Singapore. History and political development From a splinter group from the Workers' Party, the party was founded by the former party's Assistant Secretary-General Seow Khee Leng on 16 March 1973, under the name of United Front. On 5 March 1982, the party was renamed to Singapore United Front, to avoid confusion with the name of another party, United People's Front. During the campaigning in the 1984 general election, SUF's chief Seow was sued by Lee Kuan Yew (who was then the Prime Minister of Singapore) alongside the members of People's Action Party for slandering defamatory remarks made at two rally speeches that Lee and his cabinet were guilty of corruption. 1988 Singaporean General Election
General elections were held in Singapore on 3 September 1988. President of Singapore, President Wee Kim Wee dissolved parliament on 17 August 1988 on the advice of Prime Minister of Singapore, Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. The result was a victory for the People's Action Party, which won 80 of the 81 seats. Though the total eligible voter population surpassed 1 million in 1976 Singaporean general election, 1976, this was the first time that the total eligible voter population in contested seats and voter turnout exceeded 1 million. Singaporeans First (SingFirst) was a political party in Singapore founded on 25 May 2014 but was dissolved on 25 June 2020. History and political development Formation and contests In 2011, Tan Jee Say, a former civil servant, was known for his contests in both the general and presidential elections held that year, despite being endorsed by the opposition parties while defeated on both occasions. Tan stood under the SDP banner under the Holland-Bukit Timah GRC (led by Vivian Balakrishnan), where the team attained their party's best result for the election. Benjamin Pwee Yek Kwan ( zh, s=方月光, p=Fāng Yuèguāng; born 1968) is a Singaporean politician, business development strategist and consultant. Joo Chiat Single Member Constituency was a single member constituency (SMC) located in the eastern region of Singapore. The SMC encompasses the areas of Joo Chiat, Katong, opera estate, Siglap and a portion of Telok Kurau. It had previously existed from 1959 until 1988, when it was merged with neighbouring constituencies to form Bedok Group Representation Constituency (Bedok GRC).
