The 1998 WPA World Nine-ball Championship was a professional pool championship that took place in 1998 in Taipei City, Taiwan. The event was won by Kunihiko Takahashi who defeated defending champion Johnny Archer in the final. Knockout stages The following is the results from the quarter-finals. Yang Ching-shun (Chinese: 楊 清 順; born 3 April 1978) is a Taiwanese professional pool player, nicknamed "the Son of Pool". Yang won the nine-ball event of the 1998 Asian Games against then World Pool champion Kunihiko Takahashi. He defended it in 2002 against Warren Kiamco. In an unsuccessful attempt to defend that title for the second time, Yang settled for 3rd place as he was bested in the semi-finals by Jeff de Luna who then finished second to Antonio Gabica. Despite the fact that he never won a world championship in any discipline of pool like his fellow Taiwanese player Chao Fong-pang did, Yang has often been regarded as a potential world champion. Antonio Lining (born May 9, 1963, in Mindoro, Philippines) is a Filipino people, Filipino Pocket billiards, pool player, nicknamed "Nikoy". He is one of the few left-handed Asian players. Lining's most notable appearance was in the Motolite International Nine-ball Tournament in 2000, where he finished second to Francisco Bustamante, having beaten Efren Reyes in the quarter-finals. At the 2002 Busan Asian Games, Lining and Bustamante won the gold medal at the nine-ball doubles event. Between 1992 and 2017, Lining has played in one or more of the All Japan Championship (Nine Ball), U.S. Open Championship (Nine Ball) and the World Pool Championship (Nine Ball). Pool is a classification of cue sports played on a table with six pockets along the , into which balls are deposited. "Pool billiards" is sometimes hyphenated and/or spelled with a singular "billiard". The WPA itself uses "pool-billiard" in its logo but "pool-billiards" in its legal notices. The organization compounds the words to result in an acronym of "WPA", "WPBA" having already been taken by the Women's Professional Billiards Association. Normal English grammar would not hyphenate here, and the term is actually a Germanism. A general rules booklet on pool games in general, including eight-ball, nine-ball and several others.
