Canadian Football League West Division
The West Division is one of the two regional divisions of the Canadian Football League (CFL), its counterpart being the East Division (CFL), East Division. Although the CFL was not founded until 1958, the West Division and its clubs are descended from earlier leagues. Linebacker
Linebacker (LB) is a playing position in gridiron football. Linebackers are members of the defensive team, and line up three to five yards behind the line of scrimmage and the defensive linemen. They are the "middle ground" of defenders, playing closer to the line of scrimmage than the defensive backs (secondary), but farther back than the defensive linemen. 1998 Montreal Alouettes Season
The 1998 Montreal Alouettes finished in second place in the East Division with a 12–5–1 record. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats finished with the same record, but won the season series and thus, the tie-breaker. Hamilton also defeated the Alouettes in the East Final, denying the team a trip to the Grey Cup. The 1998 season was significant with the signing of future all-time team passing leader Anthony Calvillo, the drafting of future Alouette touchdown leader Ben Cahoon, and longtime centre Bryan Chiu becoming a regular starter on the offensive line. Running back Mike Pringle became the first player to rush for over 2000 yards in a single season. The Alouettes also made a permanent move to Percival Molson Memorial Stadium on the campus of McGill University after dwindling attendance numbers at Olympic Stadium. 1998 BC Lions Season
The 1998 BC Lions finished in third place in the West Division with a 9–9 record. After beginning the year 3-6, head coach and general manager Adam Rita stepped down as coach in order to focus on his GM duties. Greg Mohns replaced him and led the Lions to a 6-3 finish and a playoff berth. They appeared in the West semi-final, but lost to the Edmonton Eskimos. 1998 Calgary Stampeders Season
The 1998 Calgary Stampeders season was the 41st season for the team in the Canadian Football League and their 64th overall. The Stampeders finished first in the West Division for the seventh time in nine seasons with a 12–6 record. The Stampeders defeated the Edmonton Eskimos in the West Final and then beat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the 86th Grey Cup in the first Grey Cup matchup between those two teams. Wally Buono completed his seventh season as the team's head coach and fifth as the general manager. It was the fourth Grey Cup victory in Stampeders history and Buono became the first head coach to win multiple Grey Cup championships for the franchise. The BC Lions are a professional Canadian football team based in Vancouver, British Columbia.
