Sun Bowl (stadium)
The Sun Bowl is an outdoor football stadium in the southwestern United States, on the campus of the University of Texas at El Paso. It is home to the UTEP Miners of Conference USA, and the late December college football bowl game, the Sun Bowl. The stadium opened in 1963 and has a nominal seating capacity of 51,500, although UTEP currently lists the capacity as 46,670. History The stadium, named for the game it hosts, was opened in 1963 with a Texas Western win over North Texas State on September 21. The opening play was a 54-yard touchdown run by Larry Durham of the Miners. The land on which the stadium sits was originally donated by the university to El Paso County, who built the stadium for the school and the Sun Bowl game. The 1998 Norwest Sun Bowl was played by the TCU Horned Frogs and the USC Trojans. This was the 65th Sun Bowl held and the last sponsored by Norwest Corporation due to next year's game being held by Wells Fargo. Background Paul Hackett was in his first year (of three) with USC, having led them to a bowl game for the first time since the 1996 Rose Bowl. This would be Hackett's only bowl game with USC. TCU hadn't been to a bowl game since the 1994 Independence Bowl nor won one since the 1957 Cotton Bowl Classic. 1998 Arizona Wildcats Football Team
The 1998 Arizona Wildcats football team represented the University of Arizona during the 1998 NCAA Division I-A football season. Led by head coach Dick Tomey in his twelfth season, the Wildcats captured a 12–1 record (7–1 against Pac-10 opponents) during the year. It was Arizona's first 11-or-more-win season in school history and the best record to date, which surpassed the 1993 team’s record of ten wins. A loss to UCLA in the middle of the regular season prevented the Wildcats from earning an outright Pac-10 title and a potential spot in the Rose Bowl. San Diego Stadium was a multi-purpose stadium on the west coast of the United States, in San Diego, California. It featured the Arizona Wildcats, and the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Game summary Arizona scored the first points of the game with a 38-yard field goal from Mark McDonald opening up a 3–0 lead. 1998 Washington Huskies Football Team
The 1998 Washington Huskies football team was an American football team that represented the University of Washington during the 1998 NCAA Division I-A football season. In its sixth and final season under head coach Jim Lambright, the team compiled a 6–5 record in the regular season, tied for fifth (4–4) in the Pacific-10 Conference, and was outscored 343 to 303. Joe Jarzynka was selected as the team's most valuable player. Nigel Burton, Reggie Davis, Brock Huard, and Lester Towns were the team captains. For the second straight year, the Huskies played in Honolulu on Christmas Day. They lost 25–43 to Air Force in the Oahu Bowl, resulting in the program's first non-winning season in 22 years.
