1998 Oklahoma Sooners Football Team
The 1998 Oklahoma Sooners football team represented the University of Oklahoma during the 1998 NCAA Division I-A football season. The Sooners went 3-5 in Big 12 Conference play, and 5-6 overall. As of the 2022 season, this was the last time the Sooners failed to qualify for a bowl game. They played their home games at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium and participated as members of the Big 12 Conference in the South Division. It was John Blake's final season as head coach as he was fired after the end of the regular season and was replaced by Florida defensive coordinator Bob Stoops. John Blake (American Football)
John Fitzgerald Blake (March 6, 1961 – July 23, 2020) was an American college and professional football coach. He played college football as a nose guard for the Oklahoma Sooners. He served as the head coach of the Sooners from 1996 to 1998. Coaching career Blake served as the head coach for the Oklahoma Sooners from 1996 to 1998, succeeding the one-year term of Howard Schnellenberger. He compiled a career record of 12–22, which is the worst three-year stretch at the University of Oklahoma football history. Despite his overall record as college head coach, Blake was a great recruiter, bringing in more than half of the 2000 championship team's 22 starters, including future NFL players like safety Roy Williams and linebacker Rocky Calmus. The 1998 California Golden Bears football team was an American football team that represented the University of California, Berkeley in the Pacific-10 Conference (Pac-10) during the 1998 NCAA Division I-A football season. In their second year under head coach Tom Holmoe, the Golden Bears compiled a 5–6 record (3–5 against Pac-10 opponents), finished in seventh place in the Pac-10, and were outscored by their opponents by a combined score of 251 to 183. Bedlam Series
The Bedlam Series is the name given to the Oklahoma–Oklahoma State rivalry. It refers to the athletics rivalry between Oklahoma State University Cowboys and Cowgirls and the University of Oklahoma Sooners of the Big 12 Conference. Both schools were also members of the Big Eight Conference before the formation of the Big 12 Conference in 1996, and both were divisional rivals in the Big 12 South Division prior to 2011. The rivalry will conclude as an annual conference matchup in 2025, when Oklahoma officially joins the Southeastern Conference. 40 years of the rivalry's games were played without the teams playing in the same conference, and it is possible that the series may continue beyond that date. Faurot Field ( , ) at Memorial Stadium is an outdoor sports stadium in Columbia, Missouri, United States, on the campus of the University of Missouri. It is primarily used for football and serves as the home field for the Missouri Tigers' program. The Cotton Bowl is an outdoor stadium in Dallas, Texas, United States. Opened in 1930 as Fair Park Stadium, it is on the site of the State Fair of Texas, known as Fair Park. Red River Rivalry
The Oklahoma–Texas football rivalry is a college football rivalry game between border rivals Oklahoma and Texas. The two teams first played each other in 1900, and the rivalry has been renewed annually and uninterrupted since 1929 for a total of 118 games as of 2022. The rivalry is commonly referred to as the Red River Shootout, or alternatively the Red River Rivalry, or the Red River Showdown. The " Red River" in the name refers to the body of water that runs along much of the border between the states of Texas and Oklahoma. The game has been played on the second Saturday in October since 1934 (with the exception of select years when it was held on the first Saturday).
