1998 Georgia Gubernatorial Election
The 1998 Georgia gubernatorial election was held on November 3, 1998. Incumbent Democratic Governor Zell Miller was unable to seek re-election due to term limits, therefore creating an open seat. To replace him, State Representative Roy Barnes won the Democratic Party's nomination after a close and highly contested primary election, while businessman Guy Millner, who had run for Governor and the United States Senate in the previous four years, won the nomination of the Republican Party. In the general election, Barnes was able to defeat Millner by a margin of victory larger than Governor Miller's victory over Millner four years prior, which was in part due to the unpopularity and controversy of Mitch Skandalakis, the Republican nominee for Lieutenant Governor of Georgia. , this is the last time a Democrat was elected Governor of Georgia. Nancy Smith Schaefer (28 June 193626 March 2010) was an American politician and conservative legislator who served in the Georgia State Senate from 2004 to 2008. Education Born in Clayton, Georgia and of German descent, Schaefer went to the University of Georgia and the Atlanta College of Art; she then received her bachelor's degree from Wesleyan College. Political career Schaefer became a prominent conservative political activist in Georgia in the 1980s. Michael Joseph Bowers (born October 7, 1941) was the Attorney General of Georgia from 1981 to 1997 before mounting an unsuccessful campaign for Georgia Governor. Bowers was a Democrat through 1994, at which time he joined the Republican Party. Bowers has practiced law with Balch & Bingham in Atlanta. He now practices law at Johnson Marlowe LLP in Athens, Georgia. Early life Bowers was born in Commerce, Georgia. The 1994 Georgia gubernatorial election occurred on November 8, 1994, to elect the next List of governors of Georgia, governor of Georgia from 1995 to 1999. The 1996 United States Senate election in Georgia was held on November 5, 1996. Incumbent Democratic United States Senator Sam Nunn decided to retire instead of seeking a fifth term. Democratic Secretary of State Max Cleland won the open seat over Republican businessman Guy Millner. Primary elections were held on July 9. Cleland won the Democratic primary unopposed. Millner, a multi-millionaire who had been the nominee for Governor in 1994, faced a six-man field including State Senators Clint Day and Johnny Isakson. Millner and Isakson advanced to a run-off, which Millner won narrowly on August 6.
