1997–98 Southern Africa Tour
The 1997–98 Southern Africa Tour, titled as the 1997–98 Vodacom Tour for sponsorship reasons, was the 27th season of the Southern Africa Tour, the main professional golf tour in South Africa since it was formed in 1971. Vodacom title sponsorship In June 1997, it was announced that the tour had signed a title sponsorship agreement with Vodacom, being renamed as the Vodacom Tour. The agreement was reported to be worth over five years. Schedule The following table lists official events during the 1997–98 season. Unofficial events The following events were sanctioned by the Southern Africa Tour, but did not carry official money, nor were wins official. Order of Merit The Order of Merit was based on prize money won during the season, calculated in South African rand. Desvonde Botes
Desvonde Pierre Botes (born 2 November 1974) is a South African professional golfer. Botes was born in Pretoria. After winning the South African Amateur Championship in 1991 at the age of 16 years and 5 months, 20 days younger than the record set by Ernie Els, Botes turned professional at the start of 1992. His first professional victory came in the Mercedes Benz Golf Challenge on the Southern Africa Tour in 1993. Following further successes on the Southern Africa Tour, including the South African Masters in 1998, Botes attempted to qualify for the European Tour. He did not manage to gain full exemption in 1999, but returned the following year and was medalist at the European Tour Qualifying School less than a week after claiming his second Platinum Classic title in South Africa. Bradford Vaughan (born 14 June 1975) is a South African professional golfer. He won the South African Amateur in 1994 and turned professional the following year. Adilson Da Silva
Adilson José da Silva (born 24 January 1972) is a Brazilian professional golfer. He currently plays on the European Senior Tour and the Sunshine Tour, where he has won twelve times. Career Da Silva was born in Santa Cruz do Sul, Brazil but later moved to KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. He turned professional in 1994. Da Silva competes predominantly on the Southern Africa-based Sunshine Tour. He won his first title on the tour in 1997 and has since added eight more tournament victories, and led the Vodacom Swing Challenge standings in 2006. He holds the record for most consecutive cuts made on the Sunshine Tour with 43. Da Silva has also played extensively in Zimbabwe, where he won the Amateur Championship in 1992. He competed on the Zimbabwean PGA Tour between 1996 and 2003, winning more than 30 titles and heading the Zimbabwean Order of Merit on five occasions. The leopard (''Panthera pardus'') is one of the five extant species in the genus ''Panthera'', a member of the cat family, Felidae. Andrew Ronald McLardy (born 20 January 1974) is a South African professional golfer. McLardy was born in Triangle, Zimbabwe to Scottish parents. He had a successful amateur career, including representing South Africa twice in the Eisenhower Trophy, before turning professional in 1997. He joined the Southern Africa Tour, now the Sunshine Tour, where he has accumulated five wins. In 1998, McLardy qualified for the European Tour via qualifying school. He finished inside the top 100 on the Order of Merit in both his first two seasons, before he moved to the United States to try his hand at the PGA Tour. Darren Clive Fichardt (born 13 May 1975) is a South African professional golfer who plays on both the European and Sunshine Tours. Early life Fichardt was born in Pretoria and grew up in Centurion, Gauteng. He attended Sutherland High School from 1988 to 1993, where his talent for golf was nurtured. Wallie Coetsee
Wallie Coetsee (born 11 July 1972) is a South African professional golfer. Wallie was encouraged to take up the game of golf by his father, Ockert, a tomato farmer in Tzaneen. He played very little competitive golf as an amateur and won only a few small tournaments. Upon turning professional in 1992, he struggled to make an impression on the Tour. He convinced his father to allow him three more years on the Tour, and promised that if he didn't make it he would join him working on the family farm. He improved slightly and again begged his father for another year.
