1997–98 FC Basel Season
The 1997–98 Fussball Club Basel 1893 season was their 105th season since the club's foundation. René C. Jäggi was the club's chairman following the annual general meeting the year before. FC Basel played their home games in the St. Jakob Stadium. Following their promotion in the 1993–94 Nationalliga A, 1993–94 season this was their fourth consecutive season in the highest tier of Swiss football. Overview Pre-season Jörg Berger was appointed as the new trainer at the start of the season, but in October 1997 he was sacked and was replaced by Salvatore Andracchio (ad interim) until Guy Mathez was appointed as trainer from 1 January 1998. The club's priority aim was to remain in the top flight of Swiss football. The club made many new signings as the season started. Fussball Club Basel 1893, widely known as FC Basel, FCB, or just Basel, is a Swiss football club based in Basel, in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Formed in 1893, the club has been Swiss national champions 20 times, Swiss Cup winners 13 times, and Swiss League Cup winners once. Basel have competed in European competitions every season since 1999–2000. They have qualified for the Group stages of the Champions League more times than any other Swiss club – a total of seven times – and are the only Swiss club to have ever qualified to the Group stages directly. Eintracht Frankfurt e.V. () is a professional sports club based in Frankfurt, Hesse, Germany. It is best known for its football club, which was founded on 8 March 1899. Mariano Armentano
Mariano Andrés Armentano Lepera (born 12 July 1974) is an Argentine retired footballer who played as a striker. He also held Italian nationality, although he spent most of his professional career in Spain. Club career Armentano was born in Buenos Aires. After beginning in his country with Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield, Estudiantes de La Plata and Racing Club de Avellaneda, he had a brief stint in Switzerland. Armentano joined FC Basel's first team for their 1996–97 season under head coach Karl Engel. Thomas Grüter
Thomas Grüter (born 8 December 1966) is a retired Swiss football goalkeeper. He played in the second half of the 1980s and in the 1990s. He is now businessman and owns an advertising agency. Football career Grüter started his youth football with local team SK Root but he soon moved to FC Luzern. Another year later he moved on to FC Emmenbrücke. Grüter was called into the "student selection" of the SFV (including a game in England in front of 25,000 spectators) and later played for the Swiss U-16 and U-17. As a 16-year-old he played his debut with Emmenbrücke in the first division. Grüter was considered as a greatly talented goalie and was "chased" by half of the teams in the Nationalliga A as he moved from FC Emmenbrücke to the play on the Espenmoos in the pre-season to the 1987–88 Nationalliga A campaign. Alexander Frei
Alexander Frei or Alex Frei (born 15 July 1979) is a Swiss professional football coach and a former player who played as a forward. He is currently the manager of Basel. He began his career at Basel, going on to various other clubs in Switzerland, France and Germany before returning to his home club, where he won the Swiss Super League title in all four of his seasons, including doubles with the Swiss Cup in 2010 and 2012. Frei is the all-time leading scorer of the Swiss national football team with 42 goals in 84 games, and also their sixth-most capped player of all time. Luis Manuel Duarte Calapes (born 3 June 1978) is a Portuguese former footballer who played as defender in the 1990s and 2000s. Calapes played his youth football with FC Basel and from their reserve team, he advanced to the first team for their 1997–98 season. After playing in three test games Calapes played his domestic league debut for the club in the away game on 29 March 1998 as Basel played a goalless drew with Lugano. In the following season Calapes became more playing time under head-coach Guy Mathez. But things changed under new coach Christian Gross, in their 1999–2000 season Calapes played only seven league games. The following season Calapes was loaned for six months to Xamax and the second half of the season to SR Delémont, who played one tier lower. Fábio José dos Santos, or simply Fabinho Santos (born June 26, 1973 in Telha), is a Brazilian former player and now football (soccer) manager. Fabinho Santos played for Vitória, Joinville and Coritiba in the Campeonato Brasileiro.
