1997 United Kingdom General Election In Wales
These are the results of the 1997 United Kingdom general election in Wales. The election was held on 1 May 1997 and all 40 seats in Wales were contested. The Labour Party won a landslide victory, landslide majority of Lists of MPs for constituencies in Wales, Welsh MPs, gaining seven seats for a total of 34 out of 40. The Liberal Democrats gained one seat, whilst Plaid Cymru retained their four MPs. The Conservatives lost all of their Welsh MPs, leaving them without representation in Wales for the first time since the 1906 United Kingdom general election, 1906 general election. Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire ( cy, Gorllewin Caerfyrddin a De Sir Benfro) is a constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. The Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire Senedd constituency was created with the same boundaries in 1999 (as an Assembly constituency). Rhodri Glyn Thomas (born 11 April 1953) is a Welsh politician. He was the Plaid Cymru National Assembly for Wales Member for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr from 1999 to 2016, when he did not re-stand for election. Following his retirement from the Assembly he was appointed President of the National Library of Wales. Education Thomas was born in Wrexham, Denbighshire. He attended Ysgol Bodhyfryd, Wrexham, and then Ysgol Morgan Llwyd, Wrexham before leaving for the University of Wales, Aberystwyth in 1975 to study for a BA degree in Welsh and Education in 1975. Alan Wynne Williams (born 21 December 1945) is a British Labour politician. Williams was born in Carmarthen. He studied at Carmarthen Grammar School and Jesus College, Oxford. William Connoll Walker OBE (20 February 1929 – 6 June 2017), known as Bill Walker, was a British Conservative Party politician who served as Deputy Chairman of the Scottish Conservative Party from 2000 until 2008.
