1997 Gold Coast Classic – Singles
The 1997 Gold Coast Classic singles was a tennis competition as part of the 1997 Gold Coast Classic, a tennis tournament played on outdoor hard courts at the Hope Island Resort Tennis Centre in Hope Island, Queensland in Australia that was part of Tier III of the 1997 WTA Tour. The tournament was held from 30 December 1996 through 5 January 1997. Elena Likhovtseva won in the final 3–6, 7–6, 6–3 against Ai Sugiyama. Tennis
Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The object of the game is to manoeuvre the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. Miriam Oremans
Miriam Oremans (born 9 September 1972) is a former professional female tennis player from the Netherlands. On 26 July 1993 she reached her career-high singles ranking of number 25. She did not win any singles titles (Oremans did have two Satellite tournament wins in 1989), but did win three titles in doubles. Rita Grande
Rita Grande (born 23 March 1975) is a former tennis player from Italy. During her career, Grande won three singles titles and five doubles titles on the WTA Tour. She also won one singles title and three doubles titles on the ITF Women's Circuit. On 5 November 2001, she reached her best singles ranking of world No. 24. On 28 May 2001, she peaked at No. 26 in the doubles rankings. Naoko Kijimuta
Naoko Kijimuta (Japanese: 雉子牟田 直子 ''Kijimuta Naoko'', born March 26, 1972) is a retired tennis player and winner of five professional doubles tournaments. She has been a representative of Japan in the Federation Cup. Career In the 1990s with her sister Akiko, she ranked among the top tennis players in Japan, alongside such players as Kimiko Date and Naoko Sawamatsu. Nana Smith (born Nana Miyagi; 10 April 1971) is an American-born tennis player who played for Japan. Barbara Rittner (born 25 April 1973) is a German former professional tennis player. She currently is the captain of the German Fed Cup team.
