1997 Australian Individual Speedway Championship
The 1997 Australian Individual Speedway Championship was held at the Brisbane Exhibition Ground in Brisbane, Queensland on 28 December 1996. This was the final time (as of 2014) that the "Ekka" has hosted an Australian Solo Championship. Defending champion Craig Boyce won his third and final Australian Championship, once again scoring a 15-point maximum from his five rides. Australian Individual Speedway Championship
The Australian Solo Championship is a motorcycle speedway championship held each year to determine the Australian national champion. It is organised by Motorcycling Australia (MA) and is the oldest continuously running national speedway championship in the world having been run since 1926 with the exception of 1942-1945 when racing was suspended during World War II and 1955-1961 when the championship was not held. The first Australian Solo Championship in 1926 was held at the Newcastle Showground in Newcastle. It was won by American rider Cecil Brown from Mick Brennan and Roy Hindle. Legendary Danish rider Ole Olsen (1976) and Australia's own Jason Crump (2007) are the only riders who have won the championship while being the reigning Speedway World Champion. Jason Lyons
Jason Rodney Lyons (born 15 June 1970 in Mildura, Victoria) is an Australian international motorcycle speedway rider. Jason is the son of former rider Rod Lyons. The younger Lyons was the winner of the Australian Pairs Championship in 1992 as well as Victorian State Champion in 1997, 1998 and 1999 and he won the South Australian Championship in 1999. Jason Lyons has finished runner up five times in the Australian Championship, his best finish in his national championship. He also finished third in the 1991 Australian Under-21 Championship. In his junior speedway career, Lyons finished second behind good friend and fellow Mildura native Leigh Adams in the 1986 Australian Under-16 Championship. Australia National Speedway Team
Australia is one of the major teams in international motorcycle speedway with the country regarded as the birthplace of the sport in the 1920s. The current team is managed by former rider Mark Lemon, and captained by 2012 World Champion Chris Holder. Australia finished 3rd in the 2014 Speedway World Cup Final on 2 August in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Brett Wayne Woodifield (born 15 March 1976) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from Australia. Career Woodifield started his British leagues career during the 1997 Premier League speedway season, where he rode for Skegness Braves and the Isle of Wight Islanders, following the former's withdrawal from the league. The following season he signed for Peterborough Panthers and was part of the team that secured a 1998 League and cup double. He was also selected by Peterborough for the Premier League Pairs Championship to partner Glenn Cunningham and the pair won the Championship. Peterborough moved up to the top division to compete in the 1999 Elite League speedway season, which saw Woodifield leave the club for the season and ride for rivals Ipswich Witches in the same division. He returned to Peterborough for the 2000 season before moving on to Trelawny Tigers in 2001.
