1997 Antrim Borough Council Election
Elections to Antrim Borough Council were held on 21 May 1997 on the same day as the other Northern Irish local government elections. Antrim Borough Council
Antrim Borough Council was the local authority of Antrim in Northern Ireland. It merged with Newtownabbey Borough Council on 1 April 2015 under local government reorganisation in Northern Ireland to become Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council. Members Antrim Borough Council was sub-divided into three electoral areas: Antrim South-East, Antrim North-West and Antrim Town, from which 19 members were elected. In the last election to the former Council in February 2011, the following political parties were represented: 5 Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), 5 Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), 3 Sinn Féin, 3 Alliance Party, 2 Social Democratic and Labour Party and 1 Traditional Unionist Voice. Donovan McClelland
Seamus Donovan McClelland (14 January 1949, Toome, County Antrim, Northern Ireland – 23 February 2018) was an Irish Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) politician who was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for South Antrim from 1998 to 2003. He was appointed Deputy Speaker in February 2000. He was Chairman of the Standards and Privileges Committee and a member of the Public Accounts Committee. Educated at Ballymena Academy, he went on to Trinity College, Dublin and Queen's University Belfast where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics. In 1973 Donovan joined the staff of Queen's University Belfast and began his career as a Researcher/Lecturer. He joined the Department of Agriculture in 1975 and, in 1978, took up a post as lecturer in Economics at the University of Ulster. David Ford (politician)
David Ford (born 24 February 1951) is a politician in Northern Ireland, who was leader of the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland from October 2001 until October 2016 and was Northern Ireland Minister of Justice from April 2010 until May 2016. He was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for South Antrim from 1998 to 2018. Early life Ford was born on 24 February 1951 to Irish and Welsh parents and grew up in Orpington, Kent, England. Ford was educated at Warren Road Primary School, Orpington and Dulwich College, London. He spent summer holidays on his uncle's farm in Gortin, County Tyrone, and moved to Northern Ireland permanently in 1969 when he went to study Economics at Queen's University Belfast (QUB). There he joined the university's student Alliance Party grouping. After graduating, Ford took a year out to work as a volunteer at the ecumenical Corrymeela Community in Ballycastle, County Antrim, before starting work as a social worker in 1973. Thomas Burns MLA (born 29 August 1960) is a Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) politician who was a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for South Antrim from 2003 to 2011. Roy Thompson (born 1946) is a Northern Irish politician, initially with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and later with the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP). Local Government In Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland is divided into 11 districts for local government purposes. In Northern Ireland, local councils do not carry out the same range of functions as those in the rest of the United Kingdom; for example they have no responsibility for education, road-building or housing (although they do nominate members to the advisory Northern Ireland Housing Council). Their functions include planning, waste and recycling services, leisure and community services, building control and local economic and cultural development. Antrim, County Antrim
Antrim ( ga, Aontroim , meaning 'lone ridge') is a town and civil parish in County Antrim in the northeast of Northern Ireland, on the banks of the Six Mile Water, on the northeast shore of Lough Neagh. It had a population of 23,375 people in the 2011 Census. It is the county town of County Antrim and was the administrative centre of Antrim Borough Council. It is northwest of Belfast. History Middle Ages According to tradition, a monastery was founded at Antrim in AD 495, thirty years after the death of Saint Patrick, to take forward his ministry, with a small settlement growing up around it. The round tower (see below), also known as "the Steeple", is all that remains. The original name of Antrim was ''Aontreibh'', Irish for 'lone house', referring to the monks' house.
