The Irish News Cup was a all-Ireland, "north-south" association football competition in Ireland involving teams from the IFA Premiership, Irish League and League of Ireland mostly located in the north-west of the island. It is thus not counted among the major all-Ireland cup tournaments, since neither League champions nor Cup winners were involved. (Derry City did win the League of Ireland title in 1996-97). It was sponsored by the Irish News and also referred to as the Irish News North West Cup. It lasted four seasons. The Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium () is a municipal football stadium in Derry, Northern Ireland. It is the home ground of League of Ireland team Derry City F.C., (temporarily) NIFL Championship team Institute, and also to NIWFA Championship Ladies Team Foyle Belles FC. Paul Hegarty (Irish Footballer)
Paul Hegarty (born 30 May 1967 in Raphoe, County Donegal, Ireland) is former Irish footballer and current assistant manager of League of Ireland Premier Division club Derry City. 'Heggsy' as he is commonly referred to has also previously managed nearby clubs Institute and Finn Harps as well as another brief period as assistant to Stephen Kenny at Derry from 2005 to 2006. Sean Hargan
Sean Hargan (born 1974) is a former professional footballer known for his long association with Derry City. A key member of the Derry City's 1996-97 league-winning side, Hargan played a pivotal role in the club's success over the years. The Showgrounds is a stadium in Sligo, Ireland, which has been home of Sligo Rovers since the club was formed in 1928. History The Showgrounds was leased until 1968 when it was then purchased for Sligo Rovers by a trust foundation representing the people of Sligo. Under the terms of the purchase it can never be mortgaged, sold or used for any commercial purposes other than sport and leisure. The Showgrounds is a 12 acre (49,000 m²) site with the stadium capacity of 3,873 seats.
