The ELF 500 ROC was a motorcycle that competed in the and 500 cc Road Racing World Championship. ELF 500 ROC A new European motorcycle made its debut under the Elf Aquitaine, Elf banner in 1996. The engine was a Swissauto 500 cc Two-stroke cycle, two-stroke V4 engine, designed as a compact and powerful unit which could be used in both sidecars, sidecar racing outfits and solo bikes. It utilised a single balance shaft and a 6-speed cassette-type gearbox. Its crankshaft design allowed for the engine to fire at different angles, allowing the rider to choose either big-bang firing order, "big-bang" or "screamer" engine characteristics. James Richard Barnaby Haydon (born 2 November 1973 in Amersham, Buckinghamshire), is a British former motorcycle racer. Sean Emmett (born 4 February 1970) is an English former professional Grand Prix motorcycle road racer. Racing career Born in Walton on Thames, Sean Emmett began his career in 1989 at Brands Hatch. In 1989, he won the 350cc Production Championship. He also won the Avon Tyres Trophy for "the most talented young rider with the most promising future". Previous winners included John Surtees, Mike Hailwood and Barry Sheene. Frédéric Protat (born 17 July 1966) is a French former professional motorcycle racer. He was the 1991 250cc French superbike champion. Born in Bron, Protat began his career in Grand Prix motorcycle racing in the 1989 season riding an Aprilia in the 250cc class at the 1989 French motorcycle Grand Prix. He later participated with Aprilia again in 1991 in the 250 cc class. Between 1992 and 1994 he took part in championships sometimes with Honda, and sometimes with Aprilia. 1995 saw Protat move up to the 500cc class riding an ROC Yamaha. Doriano Romboni (8 December 1968 in Lerici, Italy – 30 November 2013 in Latina, Italy) was an Italian Grand Prix motorcycle road racer. Career Romboni raced in 125cc and 250cc World Championship races on Hondas. In 1996 he rode for the Aprilia factory in the 500cc class aboard a bike with a V-twin, 250cc engine that had been enlarged to 380cc. Aprilia tried to take advantage of the bike's lightweight and agility against their more powerful competition. Romboni managed to finish in 10th place in the 1997 season before Aprilia withdrew the project. He raced for the MuZ team in one race in the 1998 season. In 1999 he switched to the Superbike World Championship on a private Ducati. He was a frontrunner in the early races. Alberto Puig (born 16 January 1967) is a Spanish former Grand Prix solo motorcycle professional road racer who is team manager for the Repsol Honda team in MotoGP. Motorcycle racing career Puig had his best year in 1994, when he finished in fifth place in the 500 cc class. In 1995, Puig became the first Spanish competitor to win his home nation's 500 cc Grand Prix when he won the 1995 Spanish Grand Prix. He then scored two more podium results to place himself in third place in the world championship, before he crashed heavily during practice for the 1995 French Grand Prix and broke his left leg, ending his season prematurely.
