1995–96 WHL Season
The 1995–96 WHL season was the 30th season for the Western Hockey League (WHL). Seventeen teams completed a 72-game season. The Brandon Wheat Kings won the President's Cup. League notes *The Calgary Hitmen joined the WHL as its 17th franchise, playing in the Central division. *The Tacoma Rockets relocated to Kelowna, British Columbia to become the Kelowna Rockets. *The WHL divided into three divisions: The East and Central divisions formed the Eastern Conference, and consisted of five teams per division. The West division was made up of the seven B.C. and U.S.-based teams. *The playoff format was changed so that the top eight teams in the Eastern Conference and the top six in the West division qualified. The 14 playoff qualifiers all played best-of-seven series in the first round. The East semifinals were best-of-seven affairs, while the highest remaining seed in the West earned a bye. Frank Banham
Frank Banham (born April 14, 1975) is a Canadian-born Hungarian former professional ice hockey winger who last played for Hungarian club, SAPA Fehérvár AV19 in the Austrian Hockey League (EBEL). Playing career Initially drafted 147th overall by the Washington Capitals in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft, Banham played 27 regular season games in the NHL for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim scoring 9 goals and 2 assists for 11 points and 5 games for the Phoenix Coyotes, scoring no points and collecting 2 penalty minutes. He spent much of his time in the respective AHL affiliates, the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks and the Springfield Falcons. He has also played in Finland, Russia, Switzerland, Austria and Sweden. Western Hockey League
The Western Hockey League (WHL) is a major junior ice hockey league based in Western Canada and the Northwestern United States. The WHL is one of three leagues that constitutes the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) as the highest level of junior hockey in Canada. Teams play for the Ed Chynoweth Cup, with the winner moving on to play for the Memorial Cup, Canada's national junior championship. WHL teams have won the Memorial Cup 19 times since the league became eligible to compete for the trophy. Many players have been drafted from WHL teams, and have found success at various levels of professional hockey, including the National Hockey League (NHL). Tri-City Americans
The Tri-City Americans are a major junior ice hockey team of the Western Hockey League, based in Kennewick, Washington. The team plays its home games at Toyota Center. Every game is broadcast locally on the Tri-City Americans' flagship radio station 870 AM KFLD, and each game can also be heard streaming live aKFLD's UStream Channel as well as occasionally being telecast on Saturday nights on KVEW 42.2. Marty Flichel
Marty Flichel (born March 6, 1976) is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey player best known as a player for the Idaho Steelheads in the ECHL. He was selected by the Dallas Stars in the 7th round (228th overall) of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. Flichel retired in 2012 as Idaho's all-time leader in games, goals, assists and points. Clarke Wilm
Clarke Wilm (born October 24, 1976) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Calgary Flames, Nashville Predators, and Toronto Maple Leafs between 1998 and 2006. Playing career Wilm was drafted 150th overall by the Calgary Flames in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. He established himself in the NHL in the 1997–98 season after two seasons spent in Calgary's AHL affiliate. Wilm was known as a hardworking and unyielding checking line centre who has also received recognition as a good penalty killer. He can play all three forward positions. After missing out on an NHL contract for the 2006–07 season, Wilm joined his former St. John's Maple Leafs coach Doug Shedden to play for Jokerit in Finland. Mike Leclerc
Michael Leclerc (born November 10, 1976) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey forward who played 341 games in the National Hockey League predominantly with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Playing career Leclerc was a 6'1", 205 lb. left winger from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Born on November 10, 1976, he earned his chops at the junior level in the WHL, playing with the Victoria/Prince George Cougars and the Brandon Wheat Kings. He totaled 58 goals and 66 assists in 206 games through his first four seasons in the league. The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim selected him in the third round of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft with the 55th overall pick. Joshua Derek Adam Holden (born January 18, 1978) is a former Canadian professional ice hockey centre who is currently the assistant Coach for EV Zug of the National League (NL) in Switzerland. He was drafted in the first round, 12th overall, by the Vancouver Canucks in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. Playing career Holden was born in Calgary, Alberta. After playing four seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Regina Pats, finishing in the league's top ten in scoring in both 1995–96 and 1996–97, Holden made his National Hockey League debut with the Canucks in the 1998–99 season, appearing in 30 games. Robb Gordon (born January 13, 1976) is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey centre who played briefly in the National Hockey League for the Vancouver Canucks. Selected by the Canucks in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, he played four games for the team in the 1998–99 season, spending the rest of his career in the minor leagues before retiring in 2000. Jarome Arthur-Leigh Adekunle Tig Junior Elvis Iginla (; born July 1, 1977) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey winger. He played over 1500 games in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Calgary Flames, Pittsburgh Penguins, Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche and Los Angeles Kings. Hnat A. Domenichelli (born February 16, 1976) is a Canadian- Swiss former professional ice hockey player of Ukrainian descent. He was drafted by the Hartford Whalers in the fourth round, 83rd overall, of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. He played 267 National Hockey League (NHL) games for the Whalers, Calgary Flames, Atlanta Thrashers and Minnesota Wild between 1996 and 2003 before moving to Switzerland where he has played for the remainder of his career in the National League A. Mark Kenneth Deyell (born March 26, 1976) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre who was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League (NHL). As of 2020, Deyell ranks 4th in the Saskatoon Blades all-time leaders in points and 80th in the Western Hockey League all-time leaders in assists. He led the Western Hockey League with 159 points in its 1995–96 season, earning the Bob Clarke Trophy; since then, no other player has surpassed this single-season performance.
