1995–96 Philippine Basketball League Season
The 1995–96 season of the Philippine Basketball League (PBL). Notable achievements Under coach Junel Baculi, the PBL-Andoks team won the Asian Interclub basketball championships in Kuala Lumpur, defeating Malaysia-Petronas, 101–82, in the finals. The PBL selection were reinforced by seven-time PBA best import Bobby Parks and former Ginebra import Alexander Coles. The Stag Pale Pilseners completed a three-conference sweep and a grandslam in their very first season in the PBL. The Pilseners of coach Alfrancis Chua, with the likes of MVP Marlou Aquino, Bal David, Reuben Dela Rosa, Randy Alcantara, Derrick Bughao, Paul Du and best import Antoine Joubert, became the third team to win a title in their first try during the Reinforced Conference, defeating Red Bull Energy Drink in four games. Marlou Aquino
Marlou Bucao Aquino (born October 7, 1972) is a Filipino former professional basketball player and assistant coach for the Bacoor City Strikers of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL). During his prime he was known by fans as "The Skyscraper" and was, along with Dennis Espino, one-half of the so-called "Twin Towers" of the now-disbanded Sta. Lucia Realtors. Amateur career Although born in the province of Pangasinan, Marlou Aquino made an impact as a player in Metro Manila as he played for the Adamson Falcons in the UAAP. Stag Pale Pilseners
The Stag Pale Pilseners were a Philippine Basketball League (PBL) team owned by Asia Brewery, Inc., a company owned by the Lucio Tan group. It joined the league in 1995. The team was renamed Tanduay Gold Rhum Masters in 1997 and remained with the league until 1999. The franchise was the most dominant team during its PBL stint, playing in the finals in all 10 participated conferences, winning seven championships, including a grand slam finish in its debut year (1995) and four consecutive titles from 1996 to 1998. The franchise transferred to the Philippine Basketball Association in 1999, becoming the second incarnation of Tanduay in the PBA. The Lucio Tan group would return to the Philippine Basketball League in 2009 when it took over the Bacchus Energy Drink Raiders/Warriors and renamed the team as the Cobra Energy Drink Iron Men. Occurrences *PBL Commissioner Philip Juico slapped a one-year ban on Instafood coach Francis Rodriguez for his violent outburst on American referee Butch Mattias, Juico later lifted the penalty on coach Rodriguez upon the advised of the PBL board. *Former Shell team manager Charlie Favis accepted the position as the new PBL commissioner starting the Reinforced Conference. *Nikon Electric Fan took a leave in the Third Conference and in their place was the new team Kutitap Cavity Fighters. Notable achievements First Conference champion Hapee Toothpaste represent the Philippine team in the ABC Champions Cup slated June 2–9 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. The Philippines-Hapee, coached by Junel Baculi and reinforced by ex-PBA imports Tony Harris and Bobby Parks, along with Hapee mainstays Joel Dualan, Erwin Framo, Oscar Simon, Ramon Pido and borrowed players from Red Bull, Danny Ildefonso and Henry Fernandez, won the title by defeating Isuzu lynx of Japan, 77-74, in the finale. Philippine Basketball League
The Philippine Basketball League (PBL) was a commercial semi-professional basketball league in the Philippines. The league was composed of several commercial teams with several collegiate and provincial stars. History The PBL was formed on May 6, 1983, a brainchild of San Miguel Corporation chairman Danding Cojuangco, under its original name the Philippine Amateur Basketball League (PABL). It was the successor of the defunct Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association (MICAA), which folded during the early-1980s. During the inaugural PABL tournament, 37 teams divided into four divisions from collegiate and commercial ranks participated in the tournament that was played in the historic Rizal Memorial Coliseum. De La Salle University emerged champion in the league's dry-run. Towards the end of 1983, 16 teams founded the PABL and the league held its first official tourney, the Founder's Cup. Junel Baculi
Edmundo "Junel" Baculi is a Filipino head basketball coach who formerly coached GlobalPort Batang Pier in the PBA. In the PBL, he also coached the Hapee-PCU Dolphins and had many titles. Prior to coaching, Baculi played varsity basketball for the Mapua Cardinals. He coached the Philippines national basketball team that participated at the 2007 Southeast Asian Games guiding the team to a gold medal finish. He is currently the basketball commissioner for the incoming UAAP Season 81. Coaching career PBA Baculi was hired as head coach of Barako Bull Energy Boosters for the 2010 Fiesta Conference. He then coached the team until next conference, when the team played its final conference in the league. Bobby Parks
Bobby Ray Parks Sr. (November 26, 1961 – March 30, 2013) was an American professional basketball player from Grand Junction, Tennessee. He played for Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis) from 1980-1984 and played internationally in the Philippines, Indonesia and France. As one of the most celebrated "import" players in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), Parks became the second American ever inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame in 2009. College career Bobby Parks came to Memphis State University in the fall of 1980 under head coach Dana Kirk. Over the next four seasons he helped the Tigers to an 86–34 record, two Metro Conference Championships and three appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Alfrancis P. Chua (born January 17, 1966) is a Filipino sports executive and former basketball player and coach. Bal David
Bal Viray David Jr. (born August 23, 1972) is a Filipino coach and retired professional basketball player in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). He played as point guard for the Barangay Ginebra Kings. He is the current head coach of the UST Growling Tigers in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP). Amateur career David was a standout for the University of Santo Tomas (UST), leading the Growling Tigers to the 1994 UAAP men's basketball championship. His field-goal at the dying seconds of Game 3 allowed the Tigers to defeat the De La Salle Green Archers 2–1 in the championship series. Antoine Joubert
Antoine Glen Joubert (born February 20, 1965) is an American basketball coach and former professional player. He played high school basketball at Southwestern in his native city of Detroit, Michigan, where he was ranked as one of the best players of his class, winning the Michigan Mr. Basketball award and being named a McDonald's All-American as a senior in 1983. He signed to play for Michigan in college, and was a three-year starter. He was selected in the 6th round of the 1987 NBA draft by the Detroit Pistons but he did not make the team, and went on to have a 15-year career playing professional basketball abroad, winning MVP honors in Venezuela and having notable stints in Mexico and Poland. Rizal Memorial Coliseum
The Rizal Memorial Coliseum is an indoor arena in the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila, Philippines. Its capacity is 6,100. History The Rizal Memorial Coliseum within the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex was built on the former site of Manila Carnival Grounds in 1934 as a tennis stadium named "Rizal Memorial Tennis Stadium", but was later renamed “Rizal Memorial Coliseum” at an unknown time. It became a primary venue for the UAAP and the NCAA, before moving to much-larger venues such as the Araneta Coliseum.
