1995 City Of Cardiff Council Election
The 1995 Cardiff Council election was the first election to the new unitary County Council of the City and County of Cardiff following the re-organization of local government in Wales. It was held on Thursday 4 May 1995. It was followed by the 1999 elections. On the same day there were elections to the other 21 local authorities in Wales and community councils in Wales. Labour won a majority of the seats. It was preceded in Cardiff by the 1991 elections to Cardiff City Council and the 1993 elections to South Glamorgan County Council. Overview All council seats were up for election. These were the first elections held following local government reorganisation, which created new 'super authorities' and would lead to the abolition of South Glamorgan County Council on 1 April 1996. The 1999 Cardiff Council election was the second election to the post-1996 Cardiff Council following the re-organization of local government in Wales. It was held on Thursday 6 May 1999. It was preceded by the 1995 election and followed by the 2004 elections. On the same day the first elections to the Welsh Assembly were held as well as elections to the other 21 local authorities in Wales. Labour retained a majority of the seats. Overview All council seats were up for election. This was the second election to be held following local government reorganisation and the abolition of South Glamorgan County Council. In 1995 the ward boundaries for the new authority were based on the previous Cardiff City Council but, effective from the 1999 election, ''The City and County of Cardiff (Electoral Arrangements) Order 1998'' increased the number of wards to 29 and the number of councillors to 75. Caerau, Cardiff
Caerau is a community in the west of Cardiff, capital city of Wales. Often considered part of Wenvoe by gully, Heol Trelai is the main road or avenue, lined with large trees. Dominated mostly by private housing, it has the Western Leisure Centre, supermarkets, schools and churches. History Caerau, named after the Welsh language word for 'Forts', sits at the base of a hill slope on the edge of Cardiff. In 2012, Caerau Hillfort underwent a dig by archaeological television programme ''Time Team''. The research showed that the Iron Age site consists of a substantial hilltop surrounded by multi-vallate earthworks (rings of banks and ditches) that have been cut through at the southeastern extent by a major road. Heath, Cardiff
Heath ( cy, Y Mynydd Bychan) is a district, community and coterminous electoral ward in the north of Cardiff, capital of Wales. It is a predominantly affluent area with property prices being the third highest in the city. The area is known for its traditional 1930s detached and semi-detached properties with large south facing gardens. Roads are tree lined and large greeneries with the notable attraction of Heath Park and the joining of the University Hospital of Wales. Gabalfa
Gabalfa (, ) is a district and community in the north of the city of Cardiff, capital of Wales. It is characterised by a four-lane fly over road at the Gabalfa Interchange, where the A48 road meets the A470 road (North Road) which leads from Cardiff to northern Wales, and the A469 road ( Caerphilly Road). The name is derived from the Welsh 'Ceubalfa', which is literally translated as 'place of the boat'. It was formerly the site of a ferry crossing across the River Taff, upon which a school is now built. The area was first heavily developed in the 1880s, with most of the characteristic terraced housing originating from the next 30 years of construction. Fairwater (Cardiff Electoral Ward)
Fairwater is the name of an electoral ward in the west of Cardiff, capital city of Wales. It covers Fairwater and Pentrebane on the outskirts of the urban area. The Fairwater ward is bordered to the west by Pentyrch and St Fagans, to the east by Llandaff and to the south by the Ely ward. Russell Goodway
Russell Vivian Goodway (born 23 December 1955) is a Welsh Labour Party councillor for Ely, Cardiff; and the former Lord Mayor of Cardiff and former CEO of Cardiff Chamber of Commerce. He was Britain's youngest council leader when he led South Glamorgan County Council in 1992. Background Goodway was born in St Athan, Glamorgan, at the RAF Hospital. Ely, Cardiff
Ely ( cy, Trelái ''tref'', town + cy, Afon Elái, River Ely) is a district and community in Cardiff, Wales. It is to the north of Cowbridge Road West. Caerau defines the boundary to the south as does River Ely to the east and in part to the north. The Roman era In Roman times, Ely was the site of a Roman villa, near the old racecourse. There is also thought to have been a Roman road near the site linking to Cardiff Roman Fort and eastwards to Newport. 19th century In 1855, the first horse race took place at Ely Racecourse, which took over from the Great Heath racecourse. The Ordnance Survey map from the early 1880s shows just how isolated the ancient Ely village was from the rest of Cardiff. Cyncoed
Cyncoed ( ); is an affluent and exclusive community (Wales), community in the northeast of Cardiff, the capital of Wales. With many properties in the area fetching over £1 million, Cyncoed is considered to have some of the highest property prices in the country. Cyncoed overlooks the city centre of Cardiff, near Roath Park, with views of the surrounding mountains. Cathays (electoral Ward)
The Cathays ( ) electoral ward of Cardiff, created in 1890, which since 1974 has covered the Cathays and Castle communities. There is no community council for the area and it has elected three Cardiff councillors from the outset. Description The Cathays ward includes some or all of the following areas: Blackweir, Cardiff city centre, Cathays Park and Maindy in the parliamentary constituency of Cardiff Central.
