The 1994 Singapore Classic was a women's tennis tournament played on outdoor hard courts at the Kallang Tennis Centre in Kallang, Singapore that was part of the Tier IV category of the 1994 WTA Tour. It was the sixth and last edition of the tournament and took place from 18 April through 24 April 1994. First-seeded Naoko Sawamatsu won the singles title. WTA Tier IV Tournaments
The WTA Tier IV tournaments were Women's Tennis Association fourth-level tournaments held from 1990 until the end of the 2008 season. The line-up of events varied over the years, with tournaments being promoted, demoted or cancelled. Some of the tournaments became Tier V events between 1990 and 1992, and later from 2001 to 2005, before being integrated back into Tier IV. Kallang Tennis Centre
Kallang Tennis Centre is a tennis court in Kallang, Singapore. It is located along Stadium Boulevard, adjacent to the Kallang Field, and is part of the Kallang Sports Centre. It is located just outside the central business district area. History The Kallang Tennis Centre was opened as a community sports facility in March 1978. Since then, it has been a popular venue for tennis programmes and competitions, including hosting the local national schools’ tennis competitions. Naoko Sawamatsu
is a former professional tennis player. In her career, she won four singles titles on the WTA Tour. Sawamatsu reached a career-high ranking of world No. 14, on 6 February 1995. At the time of the 1995 Australian Open, her family survived the Great Hanshin earthquake, and Sawamatsu went on to achieve her best Grand Slam result at Melbourne Park, reaching the quarterfinals by defeating compatriot Ai Sugiyama, Laurence Courtois, Kimiko Date in the third round, Mary Joe Fernandez in the fourth round before losing to Arantxa Sánchez Vicario. Her most significant title came in 1993 at Strasbourg, when she defeated clay-courter Judith Wiesner in the final. Patty Fendick
Patty Fendick (born March 31, 1965) is a former professional tennis player and the former women's tennis program head coach at University of Texas. Born in Sacramento, California, she played at the collegiate level at Stanford University, where the team won the NCAA team title three times. In 1987, she was named ITA Player of the Year, when on the Stanford tennis team she had a 57-match winning streak. She won two NCAA singles titles in 1986 and 1987. She won the Broderick Award (now the Honda Sports Award) as the nation's top collegiate tennis player in 1987. Her playing accomplishments, as a collegiate and professional player, has elevated her being inducted into the Stanford Hall of Fame and also recognized as the Most Outstanding Student-Athlete of the first 25 years of NCAA women's tennis. Meredith McGrath (born April 28, 1971) is a former professional tennis player. She was born in Midland, Michigan, and made her debut on the WTA Tour in 1988. In her eight-year professional career, Meredith achieved career-high world rankings of No. 18 in singles and No. 4 in doubles. She notched victories over such players as Martina Navratilova, Martina Hingis, Anna Kournikova, Jana Novotna, Gigi Fernandez and Mary Jo Fernandez. Hardcourt
A hardcourt (or hard court) is a surface or floor on which a sport is played, most usually in reference to tennis courts. It is typically made of rigid materials such as asphalt or concrete, and covered with acrylic resins to seal the surface and mark the playing lines, while providing some cushioning. Nicole Arendt
Nicole J. Arendt (born August 26, 1969) is an American retired professional tennis player. Arendt won sixteen doubles titles in her career. The left-hander reached her highest singles ranking on the WTA Tour on June 16, 1997, when she was ranked 49th in the world. Arendt reached her career-high doubles ranking of No. 3 in the world on August 25, 1997. Arendt was born in Somerville, New Jersey. She attended the Hun School of Princeton for her high school education.
