1993 Sri Lankan Presidential Election
An indirect presidential election was held in the Parliament of Sri Lanka on 7 May 1993, following the assassination of president Ranasinghe Premadasa by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in Colombo. The president of Sri Lanka was elected by the Parliament of Sri Lanka in a secret ballot to decide who would complete the remainder of Premadasa's term. Incumbent prime minister and acting president Dingiri Banda Wijetunga was the only contester for the presidency and was unanimously elected, without a vote, as the fourth president of Sri Lanka. He was named as the candidate of the ruling United National Party. Wijetunga was to continue the presidential term of Premadasa until the 1994 Sri Lankan presidential election was held in November 1994. Dingiri Banda Wijetunga
Sri Lankabhimanya Dingiri Banda Wijetunga ( si, ඩිංගිරි බණ්ඩා විජේතුංග, ta, டிங்கிரி பண்ட விஜேதுங்க; 15 February 1916 – 21 September 2008) was the fourth President of Sri Lanka from 7 May 1993 to 12 November 1994, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka from 3 March 1989 to 7 May 1993 and the Governor of North Western province, Sri Lanka from 1988 to 1989. He was awarded Sri Lanka's most highest award to a civilian Sri Lankabhimanya in 1993 by President Ranasinghe Premadasa. 9th Parliament Of Sri Lanka
The 9th Parliament of Sri Lanka was a meeting of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, with the membership determined by the results of the 1989 parliamentary election held on 15 February 1989. The parliament met for the first time on 9 March 1989 and was dissolved on 24 June 1994. Election The 9th parliamentary election was held on 15 February 1989. The incumbent United National Party (UNP) retained control of parliament by winning 125 of the 225 seats. The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), the main opposition party, won 67 seats. The Eelam Revolutionary Organisation of Students (EROS), a Tamil militant group, won 13 seats contesting as independent groups whilst an alliance of Tamil parties ( TULF/ ENDLF/ EPRLF/ TELO) won 10 seats.
