1993 Maccabiah Games
The 14th Maccabiah Games brought 5,100 athletes to Israel from 48 nations. Jewish athletes from Poland, Bulgaria, and Czechoslovakia participated for the first time after World War II, after the fall of the Iron Curtain. Yuri Averbakh
Yuri Lvovich Averbakh (russian: Ю́рий Льво́вич Аверба́х; 8 February 1922 – 7 May 2022) was a Russian chess grandmaster and author. He was chairman of the USSR Chess Federation from 1973 to 1978. He was the first centenarian FIDE Grandmaster. Despite his eyesight and hearing having worsened, by his 100th birthday he continued to devote time to chess-related activities. Early life Averbakh was born in Kaluga, Russia. His father was German Jewish, and his ancestors were named Auerbach, meaning "meadow brook". His mother was Russian. Both sets of grandparents disapproved of their marriage because his father was likely an atheist and his mother was Eastern Orthodox, as well as the fact that his maternal grandmother died very young, so his mother was expected to look after the family. Damián Furmanski
Damián Furmanski (born 5 October 1975) is a former professional tennis player from Argentina. Biography Furmanski began competing on tour in the early 1990s. He represented Argentina at the 1993 Maccabiah Games in Israel. As a professional player he competed mostly on the Futures and Challenger circuits. His only main draw appearance on the ATP Tour came in the doubles at the 1997 U.S. Pro Tennis Championships in Boston, where he and partner José Frontera featured as lucky losers from qualifying. In 1999 he won the Mexico City Challenger doubles title partnering Gastón Etlis. He reached his best singles ranking of 198 in the world in 2000. After retiring from the tour in 2002, Furmanski moved to Dallas, Texas to launch a tennis academy. Stacey Schefflin (born March 19, 1968) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. Eric Friedler
Eric Friedler (born September 8, 1954) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. Biography Friedler grew up in Chicago and attended Evanston Township High School. From 1972 to 1976 he was at the University of Michigan, where he played on the varsity tennis team. He was an All-American collegiate player in 1975 and a two-time Big Ten Doubles Champion. Following graduation he competed professionally on tour, until 1980. During his career he competed in all four Grand Slam tournaments, in either singles or doubles. Most of his doubles appearances were with Jerry Karzen, including his only main draw entry at Wimbledon in 1977. He was runner-up in the doubles at a Grand Prix tournament in Lafayette in 1979, with Victor Amaya. Michael John Zimmerman (born May 19, 1970) is an American former professional tennis player. In both 1991 and 1992 he earned Ivy League Player of the Year and ITA All-American honors. In 1993, Zimmerman was a men's doubles gold medalist at the 1993 Maccabiah Games in Israel. Shawn Lipman (born 25 September 1964) is an American South African-born rugby union player. He was inducted into the US Rugby Hall of Fame in 2019, together with US Internationals Luke Gross and Vaea Anitoni. Stuart Krohn (born November 9, 1962) is an American former professional rugby union player. At the University of California, Santa Barbara, he was an All-American in 1986. In Hong Kong, he played for Valley RFC for eight years, as the team won eight consecutive championships, and captained the international team at the 1993 Rugby World Cup Sevens and the 1997 Rugby World Cup Sevens.
