1992–93 Snooker Season
The 1992–93 snooker season was a series of snooker tournaments played between August 1992 and May 1993. The following table outlines the results for ranking, minor-ranking and the invitational events. __TOC__ Calendar Official rankings The top 16 of the world rankings, these players automatically played in the final rounds of the world ranking events and were invited for the Masters. New professionals The World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association accepted its largest intake to date, 154 new players, bringing the total to 719 (excluding 27 billiards-only members). The new professionals included world amateur champion Noppadon Noppachorn, world under-21 champion Ronnie O'Sullivan, John Higgins (who won the junior event at the 1991 World Masters), Indian amateur champion Yasin Merchant, the fifth-ranked women's player Tessa Davidson, and future multiple ranking event winners Dominic Dale, Stephen Lee, Joe Perry and Mark Williams. Jimmy White
James Warren White (born 2 May 1962) is an English professional snooker player who has won three seniors World titles. Nicknamed "The Whirlwind" because of his fluid, attacking style of play, White is the 1980 World Amateur Champion, 2009 Six-red World champion, 3 time World Seniors Champion ( 2010, 2019, 2020), 2019 Seniors 6-Red World Champion and 1984 World Doubles champion with Alex Higgins. White has won two of snooker's three majors: the UK Championship (in 1992) and the Masters (in 1984) and a total of ten ranking events. He is currently tenth on the all-time list of ranking event winners. He reached six World Championship finals but never won the event; the closest he came was in 1994 when he lost in a final frame decider against Stephen Hendry. Neal Foulds
Neal Foulds (born 13 July 1963) is an English former professional snooker player and six-time tournament winner, including the 1986 International Open, the 1988 Dubai Masters and the 1992 Scottish Masters, as well as the invitational Pot Black in 1992. He was the runner up for the UK Championships in 1986, the British Open in 1987 and reached the semi finals of the Masters on three occasions, as well as the World Championship. After his retirement, Foulds became a commentator for the BBC and is currently part of the presenting team for ITV and Eurosport. Career The son of snooker professional Geoff Foulds, he began playing the game at the age of 11 and by the early 1980s was already one of the strongest players in his area. Following victory in the national under-19's Championship beating John Parrott in the final, Foulds then turned professional in 1983. 1992 Belgian Masters
The 1992 Belgian Masters was a professional non-ranking snooker tournament that took place between 28 October and 1 November 1992 at the Matchroom Schijnpoort in Antwerp, Belgium. James Wattana won the title, defeating John Parrott 10–5 in the final, and received £15,000 prize money. Ken Doherty
Ken Doherty (born 17 September 1969) is an Irish professional snooker player, commentator and radio presenter. As an amateur, Doherty won the Irish Amateur Championship twice, the World Under-21 Amateur Championship and the World Amateur Championship. Since turning professional in 1990, Doherty has won six ranking tournaments, including the 1997 World Snooker Championship in which he defeated Stephen Hendry, inflicting Hendry's first loss in a world final. He came very close to breaking the Crucible curse, reaching the 1998 final where he lost out to John Higgins. He reached a third final in 2003, in which he was defeated by Mark Williams. The Hexagon
The Hexagon is a multi-purpose theatre and arts venue in Reading, Berkshire, England. Built in 1977 in the shape of an elongated hexagon, the theatre is operated by Reading Borough Council under the name "Reading Arts and Venues" along with South Street Arts Centre and Reading's concert hall. Architecture The theatre was built in 1977 by Robert Matthew Johnson Marshall (RMJM), who also built the adjacent Civic Centre. The original design featured a proscenium but no fly tower. Upon opening, the venue was comparable to Derby's Assembly Rooms—which also opened in 1977—but the Hexagon was described as architecturally and acoustically superior. 1992 Grand Prix (snooker)
The 1992 Rothmans Grand Prix was a professional snooker tournament and the second of nine WPBSA ranking events in the 1992/1993 season, preceding the UK Championship. It was held from 12 to 25 October 1992 at the Hexagon Theatre in Reading, England. The event was the eleventh edition of the Grand Prix, first held in 1982 as the 1982 Professional Players Tournament. Stephen Hendry was the defending champion, but he lost his last 64 match against Tony Chappel. Jimmy White played Ken Doherty in the final, with the latter contesting his first ranking event final. White defeated Doherty 10–9 in the final to win his eighth ranking title. In qualifying for the event, Ronnie O'Sullivan defeated Jason Curtis 5–0 in 43 minutes 36 seconds, the fastest best-of-nine-frames match to date. Gary Wilkinson (snooker Player)
Gary Wilkinson (born 7 April 1966) is an English former professional snooker player. Career Wilkinson turned professional in 1987. In 1988, he won the non-ranking WPBSA Invitation Event beating Alex Higgins 5–4 in the final. He climbed the rankings to reach the no. 5 spot in the world within four seasons. One of his career highlights was at the 1989 UK Championship, where he led John Parrott 7–0 and 8–1 in their Last 16 match before falling over the line at 9–6, then whitewashing Jimmy White 9–0 in the quarter finals, and then leading world number 1 Steve Davis 4–0, 6–2 and 8–7 in the semi finals, before Wilkinson misread the score thinking that Davis didn't need snookers and went for a risky shot. Motherwell
