1991 European Sprint Swimming Championships
The 1991 LEN European Sprint Swimming Championships were the first edition of what later would become the European Short Course Championships. It was held in Gelsenkirchen, Germany from 6–8 December 1991, and was organised by the Ligue Européenne de Natation. Only the 50 m events of each stroke, 100 m individual medley and 4×50 m relay events were at stake at this inaugural edition. Gelsenkirchen (, , ; wep, Gelsenkiärken) is the 25th most populous city of Germany and the 11th most populous in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia with 262,528 (2016) inhabitants. Indrek Sei (born 26 July 1972 in Tallinn) is a former freestyle swimmer from Estonia. He competed in three consecutive Summer Olympics for his native country, starting in 1992. Sei won the bronze medal in the 100m Individual Medley at the European Sprint Swimming Championships 1991 in Gelsenkirchen. A year later in Espoo, Sei repeated that feat. Inge de Bruijn (; born 24 August 1973) is a Dutch former competitive swimmer. She is a four-time Olympic champion and a former world record-holder. Personal De Bruijn was born in Barendrecht, Netherlands. Inge is the sister of Olympic water polo player Matthijs de Bruijn. Swimming career De Bruijn tried several sports before eventually specializing in swimming. De Bruijn debuted at the World Aquatics Championships in January 1991, winning a bronze medal with the 4×100 m relay team, with which she won the gold medal at the European LC Championships in August of that year. Sylvia Gerasch (born 16 March 1969) is a former swimmer who competed for East Germany and Germany. Career Gerasch was fifteen years old when she participated in the 1983 European Championships and placed second behind Ute Geweniger in the 100 m and 200 m breaststroke. In the subsequent European championships she won her first international title in the 100 m breaststroke. Due to the boycotted the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, she participated in Friendship Games, in which she won the gold medal and set a world record for 1 minute 08.29 seconds in 100 m breaststroke.
