1991 Berlin Film Festival
The 41st annual Berlin International Film Festival was held from 15 to 26 February 1991. The festival opened with '' Uranus'' by Claude Berri. The Golden Bear was awarded to Italian film ''La casa del sorriso'' directed by Marco Ferreri. The retrospective dedicated to Cold War films was shown at the festival. ''Uranus'' is a 1990 French comedy-drama film with Gérard Depardieu about post-World War II recovery in a small French village, as the controlling French Communist Party tries to dispose of Pétain loyalists. Renate Krößner
Renate Krößner also known as Renate Krössner (17 May 194525 May 2020) was a German actress who was internationally recognized for roles in films and television. She was awarded the Silver Bear for Best Actress of the Berlinale for the title role in the 1980 film '' Solo Sunny''. From 1985, she worked in West Berlin and was known for roles in TV series such as ''Tatort'' and ''Einmal Bulle, immer Bulle''. Early life and education Krößner was born in Osterode am Harz, the daughter of a teacher. She grew up in Berlin and appeared in school theatre productions. Nicolás Echevarría
Nicolás Echevarría (born 8 August 1947) is a Mexican film director and cinematographer. He has directed over 20 films since 1973. His 1991 film ''Cabeza de Vaca'' was entered into the 41st Berlin International Film Festival. Echevarría draws on his Mexican heritage in early films. He discusses his observations of Mexican spirituality in an interview with Betsy Sussler: “I have worked with about ten groups of Indians in Mexico, and the things that I have come across most often—related to all of them is this: there are two worlds, one belongs to everyday life—to man, we get up, we take a shower, we think about what we eat for breakfast, what we’ll do for the day . . . Now there is another world, it could be called the Sacred Space.” He lived with the Huichol people for two years and made three films with them. Cabeza De Vaca (film)
''Cabeza de Vaca'' is a 1991 Mexican film about the adventures of Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca (c. 1490 – c. 1557), an early Spanish explorer, as he traversed what later became the American South. He was one of four survivors of the Narváez expedition and shipwreck. He became known as a shaman among the Native American tribes he encountered, which helped him survive. His journey of a number of years began in 1528. After his return to Spain, he published his journal in 1542. The screenplay by Guillermo Sheridan and Nicolás Echevarría is based on this journal. Directed by Nicolás Echevarría and starring Juan Diego, the film was entered into the 41st Berlin International Film Festival. Markus Imhoof (born 19 September 1941) is a Swiss film director, screenwriter, theatre and opera director. Biography He began his career as a documentary maker, focusing on controversial issues. His 1968 film ''Rondo'' was a critical look at the prison system in Switzerland. The film was banned until 1975. His next picture, ''Ormenis 199+69'' (1969) also met with censorship, as it examined the role and treatment of horses in the cavalry and suggested that the unit ought to be disbanded. Imhoof was forced to make some edits before the film could be screened in public, removing scenes that military veterans found objectionable. Only in 2002 did the film became available in uncensored form. Valeria Sarmiento (born 29 October 1948) is a film editor, director and screenwriter best known for her work in France, Portugal and her native Chile. She has worked both in film and television, directing 20 feature films, documentaries and television series'. She is the widow of Chilean film director Raúl Ruiz (1941-2011) with whom she collaborated for decades as regular editor and co-writer. She has also edited films for Luc Moullet, Robert Kramer and Ventura Pons and is a Guggenheim Fellow (1988). Vicente Aranda Ezquerra (; 9 November 1926 – 26 May 2015) was a Spanish film director, screenwriter and Film producer, producer.
