Nicolás Echevarría
Nicolás Echevarría (born 8 August 1947) is a Mexican film director and cinematographer. He has directed over 20 films since 1973. His 1991 film ''Cabeza de Vaca'' was entered into the 41st Berlin International Film Festival. Echevarría draws on his Mexican heritage in early films. He discusses his observations of Mexican spirituality in an interview with Betsy Sussler: “I have worked with about ten groups of Indians in Mexico, and the things that I have come across most often—related to all of them is this: there are two worlds, one belongs to everyday life—to man, we get up, we take a shower, we think about what we eat for breakfast, what we’ll do for the day . . . Now there is another world, it could be called the Sacred Space.” He lived with the Huichol people for two years and made three films with them. Nayarit
Nayarit (), officially the Free and Sovereign State of Nayarit ( es, Estado Libre y Soberano de Nayarit), is one of the 31 states that, along with Mexico City, comprise the Federal Entities of Mexico. It is divided in 20 municipalities and its capital city is Tepic. It is bordered by the states of Sinaloa to the northwest, Durango to the north, Zacatecas to the northeast and Jalisco to the south. To the west, Nayarit has a significant share of coastline on the Pacific Ocean, including the islands of Marías and Marietas. The beaches of San Blas and the so-called "Riviera Nayarit" are popular with tourists. Besides tourism, the economy of the state is based mainly on agriculture and fishing. María Sabina
María Sabina Magdalena García (22 July 1894 – 22 November 1985) was a Mazatec ''curandera'', shaman and poet who lived in Huautla de Jiménez, a town in the Sierra Mazateca area of the Mexican state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico."Sabina Rothenberg 2003, p. x Her healing sacred mushroom ceremonies, called ''veladas'', were based on the use of psilocybin mushrooms, particularly ''Psilocybe caerulescens'', a sacred mushroom important to the Mazatecs. Eco De La Montaña
''Echo of the Mountain'' ( es, Eco de la montaña) is a 2014 Mexican documentary film about Santos de la Torre directed by Nicolás Echevarría. It was one of fourteen films shortlisted by Mexico to be their submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards, but it lost out to ''600 Miles''. Synopsis This documentary focuses on the work and life of Huichol artist Santos de la Torre, whose paneled mural has been displayed, since its inauguration by former Mexican president Ernesto Zedillo in 1997, at the Palais Royal station. However, the story that the audience learns from Santos is that he wasn't even invited to its unveiling and how it was wrongly assembled. Niño Fidencio
El ''Niño Fidencio'' (October 17, 1898 – October 19, 1938) was a Mexican curandero. His birth name was José de Jesús Fidencio Constantino Síntora. Today he is revered by the Fidencista Christian Church. The Catholic Church does not recognize his official status as a saint, but his following has extended through the northern part of Mexico and the southwest of United States. This situation allows El Niño Fidencio to be recognized as a folk saint. While in elementary school, he met Father Segura, as well as Enrique López de la Fuente, who was the janitor as well as his friend, and later, his protector. Huichol People
The Huichol or Wixárika are an indigenous people of Mexico and the United States living in the Sierra Madre Occidental range in the states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Zacatecas, and Durango, as well as in the United States in the states of California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. They are best known to the larger world as the ''Huichol'', although they refer to themselves as ''Wixáritari'' ("the people") in their native Huichol language. The adjectival form of ''Wixáritari'' and name for their own language is ''Wixárika''. Cabeza De Vaca (film)
''Cabeza de Vaca'' is a 1991 Mexican film about the adventures of Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca (c. 1490 – c. 1557), an early Spanish explorer, as he traversed what later became the American South. He was one of four survivors of the Narváez expedition and shipwreck. He became known as a shaman among the Native American tribes he encountered, which helped him survive. His journey of a number of years began in 1528. After his return to Spain, he published his journal in 1542. The screenplay by Guillermo Sheridan and Nicolás Echevarría is based on this journal. Directed by Nicolás Echevarría and starring Juan Diego, the film was entered into the 41st Berlin International Film Festival.
