Television In Canada
Television in Canada officially began with the sign-on of the nation's first television stations in Montreal and Toronto in 1952. As with most media in Canada, the television industry, and the television programming available in that country, are strongly influenced by media in the United States, perhaps to an extent not seen in any other major industrialized nation. As a result, the government institutes quotas for "Canadian content". Nonetheless, new content is often aimed at a broader North American audience, although the similarities may be less pronounced in the predominantly French-language province of Quebec. Material World (TV Series)
''Material World'' was a Canadian television sitcom, which aired on CBC Television from 1990 to 1993. In its first season, the show was a conventional sitcom, shot on videotape with a laugh track, but in subsequent seasons the show adopted a single-cam comedy drama format. The show starred Laura Bruneau as Kitty, a Toronto fashion designer. The cast also included Linda Sorenson as Kitty's mother Virginia (Seasons 1-4), Jayne Eastwood as her office assistant Bernice (Seasons 1-3), Chris Potter as her boyfriend Tim (Seasons 1-3), Angela Dohrmann as her downstairs neighbor and then roommate Angela (Seasons 3-4), James Kee as her business partner Martin (Seasons 3-4), and Karen LeBlanc as her store employee Lucy (Season 4). ''Bumper Stumpers'' is a Canadian game show in which two teams of two players competed to decipher letter puzzles presented as fictional vanity licence plates. The show was a joint production of Canada's Global Television Network and the United States' USA Network, in association with Barry & Enright Productions and Wink Martindale Enterprises. This was one of three original series that USA and Global co-produced in the 1980s, with a 1985 revival of ''Jackpot'' and 1986's '' The New Chain Reaction'' preceding it; of the three, ''Bumper Stumpers'' was the only one that was not a revival of a previous series, and was ordered by Global without a pilot. ''Danger Bay'' is a Canadian television series, produced in Vancouver, with first-run episodes broadcast on CBC Television in Canada and The Disney Channel in the United States premiering October 8, 1984. Reruns of the show continued on The Disney Channel until 1996. A total of 123 installments were filmed between 1984 and 1990. The series was perceived as wholesome, exciting fare for older children and adolescents, and continued to be seen through the 1990s in many countries worldwide. The Global Television Network (more commonly called Global, or occasionally Global TV) is a Canadian English-language terrestrial television network. It is currently Canada's second most-watched private terrestrial television network after CTV, and has fifteen owned-and-operated stations throughout the country. Global is owned by Corus Entertainment — the media holdings of JR Shaw and other members of his family. Global has its origins in a regional television station of the same name, serving Southern Ontario, which launched in 1974. ''Jackpot'' (also referred to as ''Jackpot!'') is an American and Canadian television game show produced by Bob Stewart which saw contestants attempting to solve riddles in order to win cash and prizes. ''Jackpot'' made its debut on the NBC television network on January 7, 1974 as part of their daytime schedule and ran until September 26, 1975. The show was videotaped in New York City, where Stewart was based at the time, and was hosted by Geoff Edwards. In 1985, Stewart teamed up with USA Network and Global Television Network for a revival that aired in both the United States and Canada. This edition of ''Jackpot'' aired on USA and Global from September 30, 1985 until December 30, 1988 and was produced in Toronto, Ontario, with Mike Darow as host.
