The 1990 Volta a Catalunya was the 70th edition of the Volta a Catalunya cycle race and was held from 7 September to 13 September 1990. The race started in Barcelona and finished in Girona. The race was won by Laudelino Cubino of the BH team. John James 'Sean' Kelly (born 24 May 1956) is an Irish former professional road bicycle racer, one of the most successful road cyclists of the 1980s, and one of the finest Classics riders of all time. From becoming a professional in 1977 until his retirement in 1994, he won 193 professional races, including nine Monument Classics, Paris–Nice a record seven years consecutively and the first UCI Road World Cup in 1989. Kelly won one Grand Tour, the 1988 Vuelta a España, and four green jerseys in the Tour de France. Óscar de Jesús Vargas Restrepo (born 23 March 1964) is a Colombian former road racing cyclist, who was a professional rider from 1985 to 1995. During the 1992 Vuelta a España, Vargas won stage 20, ahead of eventual overall winner Tony Rominger. However, he failed the subsequent doping test, returning a positive for caffeine, and was stripped of his result, with the stage win awarded to Rominger. He was given a three-month suspension. Marino Lejarreta
Marino Lejarreta Arrizabalaga (born 14 May 1957) is a retired Basque professional road racing cyclist. His biggest victory was capturing the 1982 Vuelta a España, a Grand Tour stage race, and he is the inaugural and record three-time winner of the Clásica de San Sebastián (1981, 1982, 1987), which is now considered a one-day classic. In 1989, Lejarreta captured the Volta a Catalunya repeating one of his first professional wins in 1980 at the same event. Career Lejarreta rode very well in the 1982 Vuelta, but initially finished 2nd to Ángel Arroyo while coming in just eighteen seconds ahead of Michel Pollentier. Following the race however, Arroyo and several other riders failed doping controls in one of the biggest scandals in Vuelta history making the young Basque rider the de facto winner of the race.
