1990 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships
The 1990 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships were held in Durango, Colorado, United States. These were the first World Championships in mountain biking to be organised by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). The disciplines included were cross-country and downhill. Mountain biking world championships had been held since 1986, but without the sanction of the UCI. There had in fact been multiple 'world championships' before 1990, with the United States and Europe holding rival events and each crowning a 'world champion' in each discipline. The UCI decided to host its inaugural world championships in the United States as it was the birthplace of mountain biking. On the recommendation of the United States Cycling Federation, the UCI chose Durango to host the event. Durango, Colorado
Durango is a home rule municipality that is the county seat and the most populous municipality of La Plata County, Colorado, United States. The city population was 19,071 at the 2020 United States Census. Durango is the home of Fort Lewis College. History The town was organized from September 1880 to April 1881 by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad (D&RG, later known as the Denver and Rio Grande Western railroad) as part of their efforts to reach Silverton, Colorado, and service the San Juan mining district, the goal of their "San Juan Extension" built from Alamosa Colorado. Sara Ballantyne (born October 14, 1960) is an American former professional cross-country mountain biker. See most notably finished second at the 1990 UCI Cross-country World Championships. Juliana "Juli" Furtado (born April 4, 1967 in New York City) is a retired American professional mountain biker, who began her sports career in skiing. After knee injuries dashed her hopes of ski success, she took up cycling and won the US National Road Championship, and then went on to be very successful at mountain bike events - during her short 6-year career in MTB Furtado won five national titles and represented her country at the Olympics. Early life Born on April 4, 1967, her father's parents were Portuguese from São Miguel Island. She started skiing at age two, and racing at age 9 after her family moved to Vermont, where Furtado attended the Stratton Mountain School. Dwayne Norris (mountain Biker)
Carl Dwayne Norris (born January 8, 1970) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. He played briefly in the National Hockey League (NHL) in the 1990s with the Quebec Nordiques and the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. He was a member of Canada's silver medal-winning team at the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics. Playing career Norris started his hockey career with the St. John's Capitals (Caps) of the Avalon Junior Hockey League, eventually leaving home at the young age of 14 to play with the Notre Dame Hounds. He then went on to play college hockey with Michigan State. From there Norris joined the AHL's Cornwall Aces after being drafted by the Quebec Nordiques (127th overall) in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft.
