The 1990 Individual Ice Speedway World Championship was the 25th edition of the World Championship The Championship was held on 10 and 11 March 1990 at the Ruddalen in Gothenburg in Sweden. Jarmo Hirvasoja became the first rider from Finland to take a World title in any discipline of speedway. Sergei Ivanov defeated Per-Olof Serenius in the race off for the bronze medal. The Individual Ice Speedway World Championship is an Ice speedway championship held annually to determine an individual World Champion. History The first Championships were held in 1966. A European Championship was held for the two years preceding the World Championships.The event has been dominated by the Soviet Union/Russia, who have won all but seven of the World Championship titles since 1966. Sweden has won five times, Czechoslovakia twice and Finland once. Medalists In 2021 and 2022 Russian athletes competed as neutral competitors using the designation MFR (Motorcycle Federation of Russia), as the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a ban on Russia competing at World Championships. The ban was implemented by the World Anti-Doping Agency in response to state-sponsored doping program of Russian athletes. 1990 Individual Speedway World Championship
The 1990 Individual Speedway World Championship was the 45th edition of the official World Championship to determine the world champion rider. The Final was held at the Odsal Stadium in Bradford, England. It would be the 28th and last time the World Final would be held in England under the traditional single meeting format. Sweden's Per Jonsson won his only World Individual Championship to become the first Swedish World Champion since Anders Michanek in 1974 and became the first rider to win both the Under-21 and Senior World Championships having previously won the 1985 Under-21 World Championship. Jonsson defeated Shawn Moran from the United States in a run-off after both finished the meeting on 13 points. Moran was later stripped of his second place by the FIM for failing a drug test taken at the Overseas Final. Stefan Svensson (born 17 February 1962) is a former professional tennis player from Sweden. Biography Svensson was born in Gothenburg but based in Kungälv. A leading junior in Sweden, he won both European and national championships at various age levels. In 1979 he was a member of the Swedish team that finished runners-up to the United States in the Sunshine Cup. He also made the semi-finals of the boys' singles that year at the Orange Bowl and 1979 Wimbledon Championships. Specialising in doubles, Svensson played professionally in the 1980s and won a total of five Challenger titles. During his career he featured in the men's doubles events at the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon Championships.
