The 1990 ABN World Tennis Tournament (known as such in 1990 for sponsorship reasons) was a men's tennis tournament played on indoor carpet courts. It was the 18th edition of the event known that year as the ABN World Tennis Tournament, and part of the ATP World Series of the 1990 ATP Tour. It took place at the Rotterdam Ahoy arena in Rotterdam, Netherlands, from 26 February through 4 March 1990. First-seeded Brad Gilbert won the singles title. ATP World Series
The ATP International Series (known from 1990 to 1997 as the ATP World Series) was a series of professional tennis tournaments held internationally as part of the ATP Tour from 2000 to 2008. The series was renamed ATP Tour 250 in 2009. International Series offered players cash prizes (tournaments have purses from $416,000 to $1,000,000) and the ability to earn ATP ranking points. They generally offered less prize money and fewer points than the ATP International Series Gold, but more than tournaments on the ATP Challenger Series. Diego Nargiso
Diego Nargiso (born 15 March 1970) is a former tennis player from Italy. Having turned professional in 1987, Nargiso represented his native country at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, where he was defeated in the second round by America's eventual runner-up Tim Mayotte. He also competed in the men's doubles at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics. Nargiso was the first Italian tennis player to win the Junior Wimbledon championship, which he did in 1987. Jonas Svensson (tennis)
Jonas Bengt Svensson (born 21 October 1966) is a former professional tennis player from Sweden. During his career, Svensson was a French Open semi-finalist twice (in 1988 and 1990) both times as unseeded player. In the 1988 French Open he defeated Ivan Lendl in the quarters and lost to Henri Leconte in the semis. In the 1990 French Open he defeated Sergi Bruguera in 5 sets in the 2nd round, who had earlier defeated Stefan Edberg, the top seed in the 1st round. He lost to Andre Agassi in the semis. In the 1989 Australian Open he defeated Boris Becker in the 4th round. He won five top-level singles titles and reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 10. 1990 ATP Tour
The 1990 IBM ATP Tour was the first season of the ATP Tour, the newly formed tennis circuit which came in to replace the Grand Prix and WCT tournaments. It was the elite tour for professional tennis organized by the Association of Tennis Professionals. In 1990 the IBM ATP Tour included the four Grand Slam tournaments, the ATP Tour World Championships, the ATP Championship Series, Single-Week, the ATP Championship Series and the ATP World Series. The Rotterdam Open, also known by its sponsored name ABN AMRO Open, and formely known as: ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament (1991-2021), is a professional men's tennis tournament played on indoor hard courts. It is part of the ATP Tour 500 series on the ATP Tour and has been held annually at the Rotterdam Ahoy in Rotterdam, Netherlands. History The first Rotterdam Open tennis tournament was held in November 1972 and was won by Arthur Ashe. The following year the tournament was not organized because it switched to a March date. Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Carpet Court
A carpet court is a type of tennis court. The International Tennis Federation describes the surface as a "textile or polymeric material supplied in rolls or sheets of finished product." It is one of the fastest court types, second only to grass courts. The use of carpet courts in ATP Tour competitions ended in 2009. In women's tennis, no WTA Tour tournaments have used carpet courts since the last edition of the Tournoi de Québec in 2018. ATP Challenger and ITF circuit level tournaments with carpet courts continue to exist up to the present (2022). Types There are two types of carpet court. The most common outdoor version consists of artificial turf with a sand in-fill.
