The Prince Edward Island Liberal Party (officially the ''Prince Edward Island Liberal Association'') is a political party in the province of Prince Edward Island, Canada. The PEI Liberals are affiliated with the federal Liberal Party of Canada. History The party was created when PEI was a British colony by reformers who agitated for the system of responsible government. This was granted by the British crown to the colony in 1851. George Coles was its dominant figure in its first decades. While initially supportive of Canadian Confederation, Coles and the Liberals soured on the project, and it was not until 1873 that the island joined Canada as a means of relieving the PEI government's severe debts. The early party supported the abolition of school fees, and a resolution to the " Land Question" that divided the province. Gilbert Ralph Clements, (11 September 1928 – 27 November 2012) was a Canadian politician and the 25th Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island from 1995 to 2001. Born in Victoria Cross, Prince Edward Island, he was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island in 1970 representing 4th Kings. He was re-elected in 1974, 1979, 1982, 1986, 1989, and 1993. Peter Vincent Doucette (August 14, 1954 – January 4, 2019) was a Canadian politician who served in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1989 to 1996. Doucette was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. He lived in the United States for a portion of his childhood, and graduated from high school in Quincy, Massachusetts. Doucette's first political experience was serving as youth campaign manager for United States Senator Ted Kennedy. Doucette then enrolled at Stonehill College. He worked at the Regional Co-operative Development Centre in Moncton, where he was program manager, and as a contractor with Georgetown Shipyard. Doucette later moved to Montague in his home province. In 1986, Doucette helped establish the Southern Kings and Queens Food Bank and served on its advisory board through 1989. Walter Bradley (September 29, 1945 – June 2, 2023) was a Canadian politician. He represented 2nd Kings in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1989 to 1996 as a Liberal. Bradley was born in 1945 in St. Theresa's, Prince Edward Island. He married Florence Kelly in 1968. Bradley graduated from the University of Prince Edward Island with a Bachelor of Education degree, and from Dalhousie University with a master's degree in education. He was a teacher by career, and later was principal of Morell Regional High School. Bradley entered provincial politics in 1989, when he was elected a councillor for the electoral district of 2nd Kings. He was re-elected in the 1993 election.
