Prince Edward Island Liberal Party
The Prince Edward Island Liberal Party (officially the ''Prince Edward Island Liberal Association'') is a political party in the province of Prince Edward Island, Canada. The PEI Liberals are affiliated with the federal Liberal Party of Canada. History The party was created when PEI was a British colony by reformers who agitated for the system of responsible government. This was granted by the British crown to the colony in 1851. George Coles was its dominant figure in its first decades. While initially supportive of Canadian Confederation, Coles and the Liberals soured on the project, and it was not until 1873 that the island joined Canada as a means of relieving the PEI government's severe debts. The early party supported the abolition of school fees, and a resolution to the " Land Question" that divided the province. Stavert Huestis (born June 20, 1938) is a farmer and former political figure on Prince Edward Island. He represented 4th Prince in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1984 to 1996 as a Liberal. He was born in Wilmot Valley, Prince Edward Island, the son of Ira W. Huestis and Etta Jean Stavert. In partnership with his brother, Huestis was involved in potato and grain farming. In 1964, he married Edith MacGregor. Huestis ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the provincial assembly in 1978 but was later elected in a 1984 by-election held after William MacDougall left the province. Joseph Gérard Léonce Bernard, (May 23, 1943 in Abram Village, Prince Edward Island – March 25, 2013 in Prince Edward Island) was an Acadian-Canadian politician, who was the 26th Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island, the third Island Acadian to hold this position. Born in Abram Village, Prince Edward Island, he received his early education at Evangeline School in Abram Village, becoming a member of the first class to graduate from the school after the completion of its construction, in 1962. He then went on to take courses in bookkeeping and accounting while a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Soon after, he married Florence Gallant of Cap-Egmont, located in the same area as Abram-Village. Keith Wayne Milligan (born February 8, 1950 in Inverness) was the 29th premier of Prince Edward Island, serving for seven weeks in the autumn of 1996. Robert Erskine "Bob" Campbell (April 27, 1922 – May 31, 1992) was a farmer, used automobile salesperson and political figure on Prince Edward Island. He represented 1st Prince in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1962 to 1992 as a Liberal. He was born in Alberton, Prince Edward Island, the son of Keir Fraser Campbell and Eliza Mae Haywood. He served overseas in the merchant navy from 1941 to 1942. In 1943, he married Georgie Ona Lewis. Campbell farmed and raised cattle and hogs. He served in the province's Executive Council as a minister without portfolio from 1966 to 1972 and as Minister of Fisheries from 1972 to 1974 and from 1978 to 1979. Campbell died in office in Charlottetown at the age of 70.
