The 1989 Fernleaf Classic was a women's tennis tournament played on outdoor hard courts in Wellington, New Zealand and was part of the Category 1 tier of the 1989 WTA Tour. It was the 2nd edition of the tournament and was held from 6 February until 12 February 1989. First-seeded Conchita Martínez won the singles title. Conchita Martínez
"Conchita" Martínez Bernat (born 16 April 1972) is a Spanish former professional tennis player. She was the first Spaniard to win the women's singles title at The Championships, Wimbledon, Wimbledon, doing so in 1994 Wimbledon Championships – Women's singles, 1994. Martínez also was the runner-up at the 1998 Australian Open – Women's singles, 1998 Australian Open and the 2000 French Open – Women's singles, 2000 French Open. She reached a career-high ranking of world No. 2 in October 1995, and was in the year-end Top 10 for nine years. Elizabeth Smylie
Elizabeth Smylie (née Sayers, born 11 April 1963), sometimes known as Liz Smylie, is a retired Australian tennis player. During her career, she won four Grand Slam titles, one of them in women's doubles and three in mixed doubles. She also won three singles titles and 36 doubles titles on the tour. Career Smylie turned professional in 1982. She won the women's doubles title at Wimbledon in 1985 with Kathy Jordan. In mixed doubles, she teamed with John Fitzgerald to win the 1983 US Open and 1991 Wimbledon titles and with Todd Woodbridge to win the 1990 US Open. She won the Virginia Slims Championships with Jordan in 1990. Her best Grand Slam performance in singles came at the Australian Open in 1987, when she reached the quarterfinals. Thompson Tremelling (née Thompson; born 12 September 1967) is a former tennis player from Australia who won the Girls' Doubles in the 1985 Wimbledon Championships, with Louise Field. she was playing on the seniors tour. Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Hardcourt
A hardcourt (or hard court) is a surface or floor on which a sport is played, most usually in reference to tennis courts. It is typically made of rigid materials such as asphalt or concrete, and covered with acrylic resins to seal the surface and mark the playing lines, while providing some cushioning. Historically, hardwood surfaces were also in use in indoor settings, similar to an indoor basketball court, but these surfaces are rare now. The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) is the principal organizing body of women's professional tennis. It governs the WTA Tour which is the worldwide professional tennis tour for women and was founded to create a better future for women's tennis. Tracey Morton-Rodgers
Tracey Morton-Rodgers (born 18 December 1967) is a former professional tennis player from Australia. Her maiden name is Morton and she began competing as Morton-Rodgers in 1994 Career Morton, who comes from Queensland, was most successful as a doubles player, reaching the world's top 100. She was runner-up at the 1989 Fernleaf Classic held in Wellington, partnering Heidi Sprung. In addition she made the semi-finals of a further seven WTA Tour tournaments. Heidi Sprung Vasudevan (born 10 January 1969) is a former professional tennis player from Austria. Biography Sprung, who is originally from Salzburg, played Fed Cup tennis for Austria in 1988. She teamed up with Judith Wiesner to win the deciding doubles rubber over Belgium, setting up a second round tie with the USSR. Against the USSR she beat world number 16 Larisa Savchenko in the singles, but this time lost the live doubles rubber. On the WTA Tour she was most successful as a doubles player, with a career best ranking of 97. She was a doubles finalist at the 1989 Fernleaf Classic in Wellington.
