1989 Edmonton Eskimos Season
The 1989 Edmonton Eskimos season was the 32nd season for the team in the Canadian Football League and their 41st overall. The Eskimos finished the season in first place with a CFL record 16 wins and a 16–2 record. They appeared in the West Final where they lost to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The 16–2 record-breaking regular season record was eventually matched by the Toronto Argonauts in 2023. Canadian Football League West Division
The West Division is one of the two regional divisions of the Canadian Football League (CFL), its counterpart being the East Division (CFL), East Division. Although the CFL was not founded until 1958, the West Division and its clubs are descended from earlier leagues. The five teams in the West Division are the BC Lions, Calgary Stampeders, Edmonton Elks, Saskatchewan Roughriders, and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. There were also two now-defunct teams from the Canadian Football League in the United States, mid 1990s United States expansion of the CFL who played in the West Division. Norm Fieldgate Trophy
The Norm Fieldgate Trophy is a Canadian Football League trophy awarded to the outstanding defensive player in the West Division. Each team in the West division nominates a player, from which the winner is chosen. Either the winner of this trophy or the winner of the James P. McCaffrey Trophy will also be the winner of the Canadian Football League Most Outstanding Defensive Player award. The trophy is named after former BC Lions linebacker Norm Fieldgate. As part of the failed American expansion, the Fieldgate trophy was awarded in 1995 to the North Division's outstanding defensive player. Prior to 1974 the CFL's Most Outstanding Lineman Award was awarded to both outstanding defensive players and outstanding linemen in the West Division. Jeff Nicklin Memorial Trophy
The Jeff Nicklin Memorial Trophy is a trophy awarded to the Canadian Football League West Division's most outstanding player, chosen from the nominees from each team in the division. Either this trophy winner or the winner of the Terry Evanshen Trophy also receives the Canadian Football League Most Outstanding Player Award. The Nicklin Memorial Trophy was donated to the Western Interprovincial Football Union in 1946 by the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, in memory of their commanding officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Jeff Nicklin, who was killed in action on March 24, 1945. Nicklin was known as an outstanding defensive end for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers before he entered military service. Dave Dryburgh Memorial Trophy
The Dave Dryburgh Memorial Trophy is a Canadian Football League trophy, given to the top scorer in the West Division. Unlike other CFL trophies, there is no East Division counterpart, though the East Division teams were eligible in the 1995 CFL season, when the final year of the three year expansion to the United States resulted in the West / East divisions being replaced by an all-Canadian (Dryburgh Trophy eligible) North Division and an all-American South Division. CFL's Most Outstanding Player Award
The Most Outstanding Player Award is annually awarded to the best player in the Canadian Football League. The two nominees for the award are the Terry Evanshen Trophy winner from the East Division, and the Jeff Nicklin Memorial Trophy winner from the West Division. The winner of the award is chosen by the Football Reporters of Canada. The award was created in 1953 as the Schenley Award, named after Schenley Distillers Corporation, to honour the most outstanding player in Canadian Rugby Union, one of the forerunner leagues of the CFL; Schenley ended its sponsorship of the awards in 1988, and the awards have been unsponsored since. 1989 Saskatchewan Roughriders Season
The 1989 Saskatchewan Roughriders was the club's eightieth year of operation, seventy-fifth season of play, and its thirty-second season in the Canadian Football League. The team finished in 3rd place in the CFL West Division with a 9–9 record. The Roughriders defeated the Calgary Stampeders in the West Semi-Final and then defeated the heavily-favoured Edmonton Eskimos who had finished with a CFL-record 16 regular season wins. Due to their West Final win, the Roughriders qualified for their first Grey Cup game since the club's loss in the 1976 championship game. In the 77th Grey Cup, the team faced the 12–6 Hamilton Tiger-Cats who had already defeated the Roughriders in both regular season matches. However, the Roughriders kept it a close game and ultimately won with a Dave Ridgway field goal to win the championship. The 1989 Hamilton Tiger-Cats season was the 32nd season for the team in the Canadian Football League and their 40th overall. The Tiger-Cats finished in 1st place in the East Division with a 12–6 record and played in the 77th Grey Cup game. The team lost the highest scoring Grey Cup game in the trophy's history to the Saskatchewan Roughriders by a score of 43–40. Tony Champion set a franchise record for most touchdowns in one season with 15 and was the team's nominee for Most Outstanding Player. Paul Osbaldiston nearly matched his franchise record for most converts in a single season. Osbaldiston had 47 converts, two fewer than he scored in 1988.
