The 1989 Australian Indoor Championships was a men's tennis tournament played on indoor hard courts at the Sydney Entertainment Centre in Sydney, Australia and was part of the 1989 Nabisco Grand Prix. It was the 16th edition of the tournament and was held from 9 October through 15 October 1989. First-seeded Ivan Lendl won the singles title, his third at the event after 1985 and 1987. Grand Prix Tennis Circuit
The Grand Prix tennis circuit was a professional tennis tour for male players that existed from 1970 to 1989. The Grand Prix and World Championship Tennis (WCT) were the two predecessors to the current tour for male players, the ATP Tour, with the Grand Prix being more prominent. Background Before the Open Era, popular professional tennis players, such as Suzanne Lenglen and Vincent Richards, were contracted to professional promoters. Amateur players were under the jurisdiction of their national (and international) federations. Later professional promoters, such as Bill Tilden and Jack Kramer, often convinced leading amateurs like Pancho Gonzales and Rod Laver to join their tours with promises of good prize money. But these successes led to financial difficulties when players were paid too much and falling attendances resulted in reduced takings. In the early 1960s, the professional tour began to fall apart. Lars-Anders Wahlgren
Lars-Anders Wahlgren (born 24 August 1966) is a former professional tennis player from Sweden. Career Wahlgren was a top 100 player in both the singles and doubles. He won his first Grand Slam match at the 1987 French Open, beating Guy Forget. In 1989 he had his best singles performance in an ATP Tour event, reaching the final of the Australian Indoor Championships. He defeated defending champion Slobodan Živojinović en route to the final, where he lost to Ivan Lendl. He reached the quarter-finals of Wellington's BP National Championship – Singles in 1990 and also made the third round of the Men's Singles at the Australian Open that year. Wahlgren upset 15th Marc Rosset in the opening round of the 1991 Australian Open but didn't progress any further. He won the match 9–7 in the fifth set. Mark Kratzmann
Mark Edward Kratzmann (born 17 May 1966) is a former Australian professional tennis player. Tennis career Kratzmann was an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder in 1983. Juniors As the world's No. 1 ranked junior player in 1984, Kratzmann won the boys' singles tournaments at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open that year. Pro tour As a professional player, Kratzmann won 18 doubles titles, including the Cincinnati Masters in 1990 (also reaching the Australian Open men's doubles final in 1989). His best Grand Slam performance in singles was reaching the fourth round of the 1987 Australian Open. Kratzmann achieved a career-high singles ranking of world No. 50 in March 1990. Darren Cahill (born 2 October 1965) is a tennis coach and former professional tennis player from Australia. In addition, Cahill is a tennis analyst for the Grand Slam events on the US sports network ESPN and a coach with the Adidas Player Development Program and at ProTennisCoach.com. Career Player Cahill turned professional in 1984. He won his first tour doubles title in 1985 at the Melbourne Outdoor tournament. In 1987, he won his first top-level singles title at New Haven. Sydney Entertainment Centre
Sydney Entertainment Centre (later known as Qantas Credit Union Arena) was a multi-purpose arena located in Haymarket, Sydney, Australia. It opened in May 1983, to replace Sydney Stadium, which had been demolished in 1970 to make way for the Eastern Suburbs railway line. The centre was owned by the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority, which administered the neighbouring Darling Harbour area, and managed under a lease. It was one of Sydney's larger concert venues, licensed to accommodate over 13,000 people as a conventional theatre or 8,000 as a theatre-in-the-round. It was the largest permanent concert venue in Sydney until 1999, when the Sydney Super Dome opened at Sydney Olympic Park.
