1988 US Open – Women's Singles
Steffi Graf defeated Gabriela Sabatini in the final, 6–3, 3–6, 6–1 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1988 US Open. It was her first US Open singles title and fifth major title overall. With the win, she became the third woman to achieve the calendar Grand Slam, after Maureen Connolly and Margaret Court. Moreover, it was the fourth component of her calendar Golden Slam, which remains the only calendar Golden Slam achieved in tennis, men or women. It was Sabatini's maiden major final. Martina Navratilova was the two-time defending champion, but was defeated in the quarterfinals by Zina Garrison. This was the first US Open final not to have an American woman in 15 years, since 1973. Katerina Georgieva Maleeva ( bg, Катерина Георгиева Малеева; born 7 May 1969) is a former top 10 Bulgarian tennis player. She won eleven singles and two doubles WTA Tour titles. Her best position in the WTA rankings was No. 6 in 1990. Biography Born in Sofia, Maleeva is the second oldest of the three children of Georgi Maleev and Yuliya Berberyan. Her mother came from an Armenian family, which found refuge in Bulgaria after the 1896 Armenian massacres in the Ottoman Empire, and was the best Bulgarian tennis player in the 1960s. After she retired from professional tennis in the 1970s, Berberyan started a coaching career. Katrina M. Adams (born August 5, 1968) is an American tennis executive and former professional tennis player from Chicago. She was president and CEO of the United States Tennis Association and chair of the US Open (tennis), US Open, as well as the chair of the International Tennis Federation Fed Cup and Gender Equality in Tennis committees. Marianne Werdel
Marianne Werdel (born October 17, 1967) is an American former professional tennis player. Werdel was born in Los Angeles and played on the WTA Tour from 1982 to 1997. She is also known as Marianne Witmeyer or Werdel-Witmeyer. She won 19 national junior titles. In 1988 Werdel suffered a partially herniated disc, forcing a two-month absence from the tour. At the 1995 Australian Open, unseeded Marianne Werdel defeated fifth-seeded Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina in a first-round match. Isabelle Demongeot (born 18 September 1966) is a former professional tennis player from France, who turned professional on 1 May 1983. She lived in Saint-Tropez in the French Riviera in the early stages of her career and later settled further south in Gassin.
