1988 English Greyhound Derby
The 1988 Daily Mirror Greyhound Derby took place during May and June with the final being held on 30 June 1988 at Wimbledon Stadium. The winner was Hit The Lid and the winning owner Fred Smith (a London businessman) received £30,000. The competition was sponsored by the Daily Mirror. Final result At Wimbledon (over 480 metres): Distances 1¼, 1½, 1, neck, 5¼ (lengths) The distances between the greyhounds are in finishing order and shown in lengths. One length is equal to 0.08 of one second. Competition Report The Irish challenge was led by a ante-post favourite Summerhill Gem trained by Michael Enright. Irish Puppy Derby champion Make History and Bold Rabbit from the Ger McKenna kennel were two more leading Irish challengers. English Greyhound Derby
The English Greyhound Derby is the most prestigious race on the British Greyhound racing in the United Kingdom, greyhound racing calendar, with a history stretching back to 1927. It was first held at White City Stadium, but moved to Wimbledon Stadium in 1985, and then Towcester Greyhound Stadium in 2017, Nottingham in 2019 and back to Towcester in 2021. Puppy Derby (Irish Greyhounds)
The Puppy Derby also known as the Juvenile Derby is a greyhound racing competition held annually at Shelbourne Park in Dublin, Ireland. The event switched to Shelbourne following the closure of Harold's Cross Stadium in the city district of Harold's Cross. It is a major competition inaugurated in 1943 and is an integral part of the Irish greyhound racing calendar. The event is the Irish equivalent of the Puppy Derby held in the UK at Wimbledon Stadium. The competition restricted to puppies has a tradition for providing many stars of the future. Following the closure of Harold's Cross the event was switched to Shelbourne Park in 2017. The 1988 UK & Ireland Greyhound Racing Year was the 62nd year of greyhound racing in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Roll of honour Summary The sport was experiencing a mini boom, the National Greyhound Racing Club (NGRC) released the annual returns, with totalisator turnover up nearly 30% at £98,476,532 and attendances up over 10% recorded at 4,432,117 from 5465 meetings. John McGee head man to Fred Wiseman was granted a trainer's licence and took charge of the kennel. He had a remarkable year as a rookie trainer winning the Greyhound Trainer of the Year and winning the 1988 English Greyhound Derby with Hit the Lid, the white and brindle dog owned by Fred Smith was also voted Greyhound of the Year. Irish Greyhound Derby
The Irish Greyhound Derby held at Shelbourne Park, is the premier greyhound racing competition in Ireland. First held at Harold's Cross in 1928, the event was unofficial until 1932 and called the National Derby. The first winner in 1928 was Tipperary Hills who won in a time of 30.56 sec at a starting price of 1-1f. It controversially switched to Shelbourne Park in 1932 and then it was held in alternate years between the two tracks. The defunct Markets Field Greyhound Stadium in Limerick and the defunct Cork Greyhound Stadium in Western Road both hosted the event once in 1939 and 1942 respectively. The 1969 Irish Greyhound Derby was the last renewal held at Harold's Cross and the competition remained at Shelbourne Park from 1970. Pall Mall Stakes
The Pall Mall Stakes was a prestigious greyhound racing competition held at Oxford Stadium until it closed in 2012. It was run at Harringay Stadium from 1935 until 1987, before moving to Oxford Stadium in 1988. The race never received the status of a classic race in but was classified as a category one race. At Oxford it was held during the month of March and was considered to be a good guide for the upcoming English Greyhound Derby because it attracted many Derby prospects. Scottish Greyhound Derby
The Scottish Greyhound Derby was an original classic greyhound competition held at Shawfield Stadium. Held at Carntyne Stadium from 1928 to 1968, after the closure of Carntyne the race appeared at Shawfield from 1970 until 1985. In 1988 the Greyhound Racing Association (GRA), moved the race to Powderhall Stadium in Edinburgh because they had the rights to the event and wanted it to take place at one of their tracks. After just two years it returned to Glasgow and Shawfield following the sale of Powderhall by the GRA. The Blue Riband was a greyhound racing competition held annually at Wembley Stadium and Hall Green Stadium. It was inaugurated in 1981 as a replacement competition for the Wembley Spring Cup which finished in 1980. Following the end of the Wembley Greyhounds the race transferred to Greyhound Racing Association (GRA) sister track Hall Green in 1999. The race was discontinued by the GRA after the 2012 running despite being a category one race. Ernie Gaskin
Ernie Gaskin Sr. (1933–2020) was an English greyhound trainer. He was three times winner of the Trainers Championship and won 12 classic races. Career In 1961 Ernie Gaskin's Clopook ran in the English Derby final just two months after being granted a trainers licence. He relinquished his licence in 1963 after Horney Council objected to his kennels and he sold his greyhounds at Aldridges sales. In 1977 he established new kennels in Nazeing, Essex. Gaskin bred many of his own greyhounds including Devilish Dolores that won the 1980 Oaks and was also the breeder of the 1971 English Greyhound Derby champion Dolores Rocket. Further classic wins were achieved by Kinda Friendly, Mobile Bank and Ballygroman Jim before he won his first Trainers Championship in 1988, the same year that he had two Derby finalists with Curryhills Gara and Comeragh Boy. Wimbledon Stadium
Wimbledon Stadium, also known as Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium, was a greyhound racing track located in Wimbledon in southwest London, England. It also hosted stock car and other small circuit motor racing events, and until 2005 hosted motorcycle speedway. The stadium hosted the English Greyhound Derby every year between 1985 and 2016. Facing declining attendances and with no renovations undertaken for many years, the stadium was put up for sale by the owners, the Greyhound Racing Association, and closed permanently in March 2017. The site was purchased by Galliard Homes Limited, in order to build 600 new apartments and a new football stadium, the new Plough Lane, for AFC Wimbledon. The stadium was demolished in 2018 to clear the site for the new development; it was one of London's last remaining greyhound stadium with only Crayford and Romford left and was the third to close since the turn of the century after Catford Stadium in 2003 and Walthamstow Stadium in 2008. Wembley Greyhounds was the greyhound racing operation held at Wembley Stadium in London. History Origins After the 1924-25 British Empire Exhibition Wembley Stadium was in liquidation before eventually being purchased by Arthur Elvin. For the stadium to survive into the future it required much needed revenue and it was greyhound racing that provided it. John Honeysett
John Honeysett (1938–2018) was an English greyhound trainer. He was the UK trainers championship winner in 1979. Profile Honeysett worked for Paddy Coughlan before obtaining his own private trainers license. In 1978 he joined Crayford & Bexleyheath Stadium as a contracted trainer. He was propelled to fame within the industry when winning the 1979 Trainers Championship. In 1980 he steered Corduroy through to the final of the 1980 English Greyhound Derby and one year later Clohast Fame reached the 1981 English Greyhound Derby. During 1983 he switched from Crayford to join Wembley. He trained out of Pendene Farm and Kennels in Redhill, Surrey. From 1986 - 1989 he handled four successive English Greyhound Derby finalists, Easy Prince, Stouke Whisper (twice) and Early Vocation. His owners included Patsy Byrne.
