Final league standings for the 1987 Western Soccer Alliance season. History Prior to the season, the Edmonton Brick Men left the league to join the new Canadian Soccer League. This left the Alliance with six teams, which retained its regular season single table standings, but added a post-season playoff to determine the league champion for 1987. The San Diego Nomads won both the regular season and playoff titles. Western Soccer Alliance
Western Soccer Alliance was a professional soccer league featuring teams from the West Coast of the United States and Western Canada. The league began in 1985 as the Western Alliance Challenge Series. In 1986, it became the Western Soccer Alliance. In 1989, it existed for a single year as the Western Soccer League before merging with the American Soccer League to form the American Professional Soccer League in 1990. History Origins After the demise of the North American Soccer League in 1984 and the United Soccer League in 1985, four independent teams—F.C. Portland, F.C. Seattle, San Jose Earthquakes and Victoria Riptides—created the Western Alliance Challenge Series in the summer of 1985. Tim Martin (soccer)
Tim Martin (born April 12, 1967 in San Jose, California) is a former American soccer defender. Over his twelve-year professional career, he played with numerous teams in six leagues, winning the 1994 U.S. Open Cup with the San Francisco Greek-Americans and the 1991 American Professional Soccer League title with the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks. He also earned two caps with the U.S. national team. Since retiring from playing in 2000, he has become a college and youth soccer coach. Player Youth Martin began his college career at UC Berkeley in 1986. However, he transferred to Fresno State where he would go on to play three season (1987–1989) for the Bulldogs. During those three seasons, Martin captained the team and earned honors as the 1989 Big West player of the year, made Big West and Far West Regional First Teams. In 1989, he was also selected as an NCAA First Team All-American. He finished his career at Fresno State with 25 assists.

Robbie Zipp
Robert Zipp is a retired U.S. soccer player who currently serves as a youth soccer referee. Zipp attended O'Dea High School in Seattle, Washington where he was a four year varsity letterman on the boys' soccer team. He was also a two year letterman on the football team. Additionally, Parade Magazine selected Zipp as a high school All-American soccer player in 1980 and 1981. After graduating from high school, he was drafted in the first round of the North American Soccer League (NASL) draft. Records don’t show which team drafted him. However in 1981, Zipp was a member of Washington Diplomats. Zipp then played the 1981-1982 NASL indoor season with the Seattle Sounders (1974–1983), Seattle Sounders; however, he never appeared in an outdoor game with the Sounders. Daryl Green
Daryl Green is an American former professional soccer player. He played four seasons in the Western Soccer Alliance, one in the American Professional Soccer League and two in Major Indoor Soccer League. He later became a youth soccer coach. Youth Green was born in Seattle, Washington, and began playing soccer when he was seven. Two years later, his family moved to Montana, where there were no organized teams. When he was eleven, his family returned to Washington, settling in Kent, where he played youth soccer with the Bellevue, Washington Eastside Select and high school soccer at Tahoma Senior High School. He was All State in soccer in 1983 and 1984. Green did not excel only at soccer, but was an excellent high school basketball player, earning All State honors in that sport in 1984. Barney Boyce
Barney Boyce (born November 2, 1960) is a retired American soccer player who played professionally in the North American Soccer League, Major Indoor Soccer League and Western Soccer Alliance. He coached the San Jose Earthquakes in the Western Soccer Alliance. Player On September 13, 1979, the Washington Diplomats of the North American Soccer League signed Boyce who was eighteen at the time. He had been playing in Yugoslavia at the time. In the fall of 1980, the Montreal Manic purchased Boyce's contract from the Dips. Anton Nistl
Anton Nistl is a retired U.S. soccer goalkeeper. He was the 1989 ISAA Goalkeeper of the Year and spent three seasons in the Western Soccer Alliance and one in the American Professional Soccer League. College Nistl attended UCLA where he played on the men's soccer team from 1986-1989. He was one in a long line of outstanding collegiate goalkeepers at UCLA that began with Tim Harris and David Vanole and continued with Brad Friedel, Kevin Hartman, Matt Reis, Nick Rimando and Zach Wells. Nistl's individual statistics put him at the top of this list. He holds school's records for career shutouts (41), victories (56) and single season GAA (.53 in both 1986 and 1989). Brent Goulet
Brent Goulet (born June 19, 1964) is a retired American soccer forward who later coached SV Elversberg from 2004 to 2008. He began his career in the United States before moving to England and Germany, and also earned eight caps with the U.S. national team. He was the 1987 U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year (Most prestigious award in U.S. Soccer) and was a member of the United States Olympic Soccer team at the (1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea). Steve Boardman is a retired American soccer defender who played professionally in the Western Soccer Alliance, Major Indoor Soccer League and National Professional Soccer League. Youth Growing up, he played for the La Jolla Nomads soccer club. He graduated from La Jolla High School and attended San Diego State University where he played on the men's soccer team from 1983 to 1986. Professional From 1986 through 1989, Boardman played for the San Diego Nomads of the Western Soccer League. He was a 1987 First Team All League defender with the Nomads. John Hamel
John Hamel (born January 31, 1967) is a retired American soccer midfielder who played three seasons in the Western Soccer Alliance, one in the American Professional Soccer League, one in the Continental Indoor Soccer League and at least one in the Major Indoor Soccer League. Playing Hamel grew up in Seattle where he attended Blanchet High School. He then attended the University of Washington where he played on the men's soccer team from 1985 to 1988. In 1987, he moved to the F.C. Seattle of the Western Soccer Alliance. That year he was second team All-WSA. He played for Seattle through the 1990 season. That year, the team's last in existence, was spent in the American Professional Soccer League. Mike Enneking
Mike Enneking is a retired American soccer player who played professionally in the Western Soccer Alliance and Major Indoor Soccer League. He is the Vice President of Crossfire Premier Soccer Club. Enneking graduated from Bellarmine Preparatory School in 1980. He set the Washington State prep single season scoring record with 39 goals and was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001. Geoff Wall
Geoff Wall is a retired American soccer midfielder who played professionally in the North American Soccer League, Major Indoor Soccer League and Western Soccer Alliance. Wall graduated from Ballard High School in 1982. He was a 1981 Parade Magazine High School All American soccer player. On December 15, 1981, the Portland Timbers selected Wall in the second round of the NASL draft. However, the Timbers folded in 1982. and Wall went on trial with AFC Bournemouth for four months.
