1987 New Zealand Rugby League Season
The 1987 New Zealand rugby league season was the 80th season of rugby league that had been played in New Zealand. The main feature of the year was the Interdistricts Series competition that was run by the New Zealand Rugby League. Auckland won the series, defeating the other three inter-district teams. International competitions The New Zealand national rugby league team began the season poorly when a domestic based side lost to the touring Queensland side 18–14 in May. Queensland then finished their tour undefeated by thrashing Bay of Plenty 72–6. The Kiwis then toured Papua New Guinea and Australia later in the year. The 1986 New Zealand rugby league season was the 79th season of rugby league that had been played in New Zealand. Sam Panapa
Samuel Lameko Panapa is a New Zealand former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s. He represented three countries in his career: Tokelau, New Zealand and Western Samoa. Panapa played his club football in Auckland as well as England, where he won several titles with the champion Wigan side of the 1990s. Group 1 Rugby League
Group 1 Rugby League was a rugby league competition held in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia, run under the auspices of the Country Rugby League. The group, however, still runs a junior rugby league competition. When the Group 18-Gold Coast competition dissolved in 2005, the New South Wales sides joined together with Group 1 to form a divisional league, Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League (NRRRL). Group 18 also still holds its own individual junior rugby league competition. Shane David Cooper (born 26 May 1962) is a New Zealand former rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s. He represented New Zealand in the 1988 World Cup Final and had a long career in England with St. Helens and Widnes. Cooper is now a senior walker at the Mt Albert Walking Club & an active member of the Akarana Golf Club. Ronald Phillip O'Regan is a New Zealand former rugby league footballer, and coach who represented New Zealand between 1983 and 1986. His nephew, Daniel, played for the New Zealand Warriors. Playing career As a young boy he idolised players such as Roger Bailey. In 1981 and 1983, while playing for City Newton, O'Regan won the Rothville Trophy, awarded to the player of the year in the Auckland Rugby League competition. He toured England with the New Zealand Māori side in 1983. As a 17 year old was offered a contract to play league at Wigan but did not take it up. Mark Gregory Horo (born 27 March 1963) is a New Zealand rugby league coach and former footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s. A New Zealand national rugby league team, New Zealand international representative, he played club football in New Zealand for Te Atatu and in Australia for Parramatta and Wests before finishing his career back in Auckland with the Warriors. Dean Robert "Locust" Lonergan is a New Zealand former professional rugby league footballer, and current events promoter. He was the promoter of Jeff "The Hornet" Horn who won the WBO Welterweight World Championship against Manny Pacquiao in 2017.
