1987 Chatham Cup
The 1987 Chatham Cup was the 60th annual nationwide knockout football competition in New Zealand. Up to the last 16 of the competition, the cup was run in three regions (northern, central, and southern). National League teams received a bye until the final 32 stage. In all, 143 teams took part in the competition. Note: Different sources give different numberings for the rounds of the competition: some start round one with the beginning of the regional qualifications; others start numbering from the first national knock-out stage. The former numbering scheme is used in this article. The 1987 final As with the 1986 competition, the final was held over two legs, one at the home ground of each finalist. Sean Byrne (New Zealand Footballer)
Sean Patrick Byrne (23 August 1955 – 11 August 2003) was an association football player who played as a defender. Born in Ireland, he represented the New Zealand national team at international level. Byrne was a highly regarded player at Dundalk, forming an outstanding combination in central midfield with Leo Flanagan. Perhaps the highlight of his career was in Dundalk's 1981–82 European Cup Winners' Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur when Byrne successfully curtailed the influence of English superstar Glenn Hoddle and Argentinian international Ossie Ardiles - despite Spurs claiming a 2-1 aggregate victory. A move to New Zealand club Gisborne City followed and it was there after some outstanding performances in the New Zealand Football Championship that Byrne was called up for the New Zealand men's national football team. Hutt Valley United
Hutt Valley United was a short-lived association football club from New Zealand. A composite team, the club was founded in 1987 ostensibly to represent the interests of several senior teams from the Hutt Valley area just north of Wellington in the New Zealand National Soccer League. Hutt Valley United played in the national league from 1987 to 1992, achieving their best result in the 1989 competition, finishing fifth. Ellerslie AFC is an association football club based in Ellerslie, New Zealand. The senior team currently competes in the NRFL Championship. Club history Ellerslie AFC’s history goes back to the original founding of the Auckland Football Association in 1887, whereby it was one of the seven clubs to participate in the Association’s inaugural competition. The Club continued into the second season of organised soccer in Auckland, but, like the playing of the game at that time, did not continue past that point. Manurewa AFC is an amateur football (soccer) club in Manurewa, Auckland, New Zealand. They will compete in Lotto Sport Italia NRFL Division 1 with newly appointed head coach Marty Rodwell History Manurewa AFC was formed by the merger of Tramways (1929 Chatham Cup winner) and another club named Manurewa. The merged entity initially used the portmanteau name of Tramurewa, during which time the club won the 1931 Chatham Cup. Waihopai is a football club based in Invercargill, New Zealand. The club now serves as a feeder club to the Southland United team. Waihopai was founded in 1950 and plays its home games at Surrey Park.
