1986 South African Professional Championship
The 1986 South African Professional Championship was a non-ranking snooker tournament, which took place in August 1986 at the Summit Club, Johannesburg. The tournament featured eleven South African players. Silvino Francisco won his first national title with a 9–1 victory over Francois Ellis in the final. The tournament was sponsored by the South African insurance company Colonial Mutual, which provided R50,000 in prize money. Francisco received R7,000 of this as winner. Additionally, the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) funded £8,000 in prize money through its national championship subsidy, a scheme which provided £1,000 per entrant. Three of the eleven entrants (Blignaut, Amdor and Johnston) were recognised as professionals only in South Africa and not by the WPBSA. Francisco received £2,500 as winner. World Professional Billiards And Snooker Association
The World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) is the governing body of professional snooker and English billiards based in Bristol, England. It owns and publishes the official rules of the two sports and engages in promotional activities. The Professional Billiard Players Association (PBPA) was founded in 1946, and, after some years of inactivity, was revived in 1968 and renamed the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association in 1970. Snooker World Rankings
The snooker world rankings are the official system of ranking professional snooker players to determine automatic qualification and seeding for tournaments on the World Snooker Tour. The ranking lists are maintained by the sport's governing body, the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association. Each player's world ranking is based on their performances in designated ranking tournaments over the preceding two years. The world ranking list is updated after every ranking tournament. The system of world rankings was inaugurated in the 1976–77 season. Until the 2013–14 season, the point tariffs for each tournament were set by the governing body, but the rankings transitioned to a prize money list in the 2014–15 season. Silvino Francisco
Silvino Francisco (born 3 May 1946) is a South African former professional snooker player, most notable for winning the 1985 British Open. Snooker career Francisco comes from a snooker-playing family. His brother Manuel and nephew Peter both played at a high level, Manuel having been a runner-up in the World Amateur Billiards Championship on several occasions, and Peter having risen to the world ranking of number 14. Francisco won the 1985 British Open, beating Kirk Stevens 12–9. Prior to the start of the Final match, Francisco accused Stevens of playing under the influence of drugs. Francisco was subsequently fined for the comments. The 1979 South African Professional Championship was a non-ranking snooker tournament, which took place in August 1979. The tournament featured five exclusively South African players - Derek Mienie, Jimmy van Rensberg, Mannie Francisco, Peter Francisco and the incumbent champion, Perrie Mans. Mienie won the title, beating van Rensberg 9–6 in the final. Peter Francisco (snooker Player)
Peter Francisco (born 14 February 1962 in Cape Town, Western Cape) is a former South African professional snooker player who won the African Snooker Championship 4 times and South African Snooker Championship 8 times and the South African Billiards Championship 13 times as an amateur and professional. Career Francisco turned professional in 1984, and reached the final stages of the World Snooker Championship on five occasions: 1988, 1989, 1990, 1992 and 1995. He reached the semifinals in two ranking events: the 1986 International Open and the 1987 Grand Prix. In June 2013 he won the ABSF African Snooker Championship. Francisco participated in the 2015 Six-red World Championship, playing five matches in his group. Robbie Grace
Robbie Grace (born 14 June 1954) is a South African former professional snooker player. Career Born in 1954, Grace turned professional in 1985, but the only tournament he entered that season was the 1986 World Championship. In his first match as a professional, he beat Maurice Parkin 10–8, but he lost in the second round of qualifying 3–10 to Wayne Jones. Despite only winning one match, Grace began the next season ranked 63rd of the 118 players on the main tour; he entered five tournaments during that season, including the 1986 UK Championship, where he recorded the best performance of his career.
