1979 South African Professional Championship
The 1979 South African Professional Championship was a non-ranking snooker tournament, which took place in August 1979. The tournament featured five exclusively South African players - Derek Mienie, Jimmy van Rensberg, Mannie Francisco, Peter Francisco and the incumbent champion, Perrie Mans. Mienie won the title, beating van Rensberg 9–6 in the final. World Professional Billiards And Snooker Association
The World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) is the governing body of professional snooker and English billiards based in Bristol, England. It owns and publishes the official rules of the two sports and engages in promotional activities. The Professional Billiard Players Association (PBPA) was founded in 1946, and, after some years of inactivity, was revived in 1968 and renamed the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association in 1970. It owns a 26 per cent share of World Snooker, which organises the professional snooker ranking circuit events. Snooker World Rankings
The snooker world rankings are the official system of ranking professional snooker players to determine automatic qualification and seeding for tournaments on the World Snooker Tour. The ranking lists are maintained by the sport's governing body, the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association. Each player's world ranking is based on their performances in designated ranking tournaments over the preceding two years. The world ranking list is updated after every ranking tournament. The system of world rankings was inaugurated in the 1976–77 season. Until the 2013–14 season, the point tariffs for each tournament were set by the governing body, but the rankings transitioned to a prize money list in the 2014–15 season. Jimmy Van Rensberg
Jimmy van Rensberg (born 24 October 1931) is a South African former professional snooker player. He won the South African Professional Championship in 1984. He was a record 12-time winner of the South African Amateur Championship. Career Born in 1931, van Rensberg turned professional in 1978 at the relatively advanced age of 46. He entered few tournaments in his first several seasons on tour, reaching the final of the 1979 South African Professional Championship after beating Silvino Francisco in the semi-finals; this was van Rensberg's first match in the event, and he lost the final 6–9 to Derek Mienie. After losing 1–9 to Tony Meo in qualifying for the 1980 World Championship, van Rensberg next played a competitive match in the 1984 edition of the tournament. 1986 South African Professional Championship
The 1986 South African Professional Championship was a non-ranking snooker tournament, which took place in August 1986 at the Summit Club, Johannesburg. The tournament featured eleven South African players. Silvino Francisco won his first national title with a 9–1 victory over Francois Ellis in the final. The tournament was sponsored by the South African insurance company Colonial Mutual, which provided R50,000 in prize money. Francisco received R7,000 of this as winner. Additionally, the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) funded £8,000 in prize money through its national championship subsidy, a scheme which provided £1,000 per entrant. Three of the eleven entrants (Blignaut, Amdor and Johnston) were recognised as professionals only in South Africa and not by the WPBSA. Francisco received £2,500 as winner. Peter Francisco (born 14 February 1962 in Cape Town, Western Cape) is a former South African professional snooker player who won the African Snooker Championship 4 times and South African Snooker Championship 8 times and the South African Billiards Championship 13 times as an amateur and professional. Perrie Mans
Pierre "Perrie" Mans (born 14 October 1940) is a retired professional snooker player from South Africa, who first won the South African Professional Championship in 1965, and won the event 20 times. Mans won the Benson & Hedges Masters in 1979 and reached the final of the World Championship in 1978. Background Mans' father, Peter Mans, who died in 1975, was also a professional snooker player, making the quarter-finals of the 1950 World Snooker Championship. Silvino Francisco (born 3 May 1946) is a South African former professional snooker player, most notable for winning the 1985 British Open. Snooker career Francisco comes from a snooker-playing family. His brother Manuel and nephew Peter both played at a high level, Manuel having been a runner-up in the World Amateur Billiards Championship on several occasions, and Peter having risen to the world ranking of number 14. Francisco won the 1985 British Open, beating Kirk Stevens 12–9. Prior to the start of the Final match, Francisco accused Stevens of playing under the influence of drugs.
