1986 Miami Hurricanes Football Team
The 1986 Miami Hurricanes football team represented the University of Miami during the 1986 NCAA Division I-A football season. It was the Hurricanes' 61st season of football. The Hurricanes were led by third-year head coach Jimmy Johnson and played their home games at the Orange Bowl. Miami outscored their opponents 420–136, including a 28-16 victory against the Oklahoma Sooners, who were the defending national champions and ranked No. 1 at the time. At 11-0, it was Miami's first undefeated regular season, which they finished ranked No. 1. They were invited to the Fiesta Bowl, which also served as the National Championship Game, and lost 14-10 to No. 2 Penn State, who was also undefeated. Jimmy Johnson (American Football Coach)
James William Johnson (born July 16, 1943) is an American sports analyst and former football coach. Johnson served as a head football coach on the collegiate level from 1979 to 1988 and in the National Football League (NFL) for nine seasons. He is the first head football coach to win both a college football national championship and a Super Bowl (Barry Switzer and Pete Carroll have since joined him), achieving the former with Miami and the latter with the Dallas Cowboys. Johnson held his first head football coaching position at Oklahoma State before becoming Miami's head football coach in 1984 and guided the team to victory in the 1988 Orange Bowl. His collegiate success resulted in Johnson succeeding original Cowboys head coach Tom Landry in 1989, a position that saw him help rebuild the team back to winning form. 1986 Texas Tech Red Raiders Football Team
The 1986 Texas Tech Red Raiders football team represented Texas Tech University as a memnber of the Southwest Conference (SWC) during the 1986 NCAA Division I-A football season. In their first and only season under head coach David McWilliams, the Red Raiders compiled a 7–4 record in the regular season (5–3 against SWC opponents) and finished in a tie for fourth place in the conference. The team was invited to play in the 1986 Independence Bowl and lost to Ole Miss, 20 to 17. The team was coached in the bowl game by Spike Dykes. The Florida State–Miami football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Florida State Seminoles football team of Florida State University and Miami Hurricanes football team of the University of Miami. Since the late 1980s, one or both squads have been highly ranked entering the game, adding national championship implications to an already heated rivalry. Kicks have played an important role in the series with many wide right, wide left, blocks and other mistakes occurring with the game in the balance. Raycom Sports is an American producer of sports television programs. It is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, and owned and operated by Gray Television. It was founded in 1979 by husband and wife, Rick and Dee Ray. In the 1980s, Raycom Sports established a prominent joint venture with Jefferson-Pilot Communications which made them partners on the main Atlantic Coast Conference basketball package. Raycom was acquired in 1994 by Ellis Communications. Two years later, Ellis was acquired by a group led by Retirement Systems of Alabama, who renamed the entire company Raycom Media to build upon the awareness of Raycom Sports. James Gamble Nippert Memorial Stadium is an outdoor stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, on the campus of the University of Cincinnati.
