1986 Magnolia Cheese Makers Season
The 1986 Magnolia Cheese Makers season was the 12th season of the franchise in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). League return After a two-conference leave, the San Miguel Corporation decided to return in the PBA Third Conference. The team will be known as Magnolia Cheese Makers and coach by Derrick Pumaren, who was assistant coach of Magnolia last season. The ballclub acquired eight players from the fabled Northern Consolidated (NCC) quintet, they are Samboy Lim, Hector Calma, Yves Dignadice, Elmer Reyes, Franz Pumaren, Pido Jarencio, Alfie Almario and Tonichi Yturri, who were all members of the national team that won the Asian Basketball Confederation (ABC) championships in Kuala Lumpur earlier in the year. Derrick Pumaren
Frederick "Derrick" S. Pumaren, better known on his nickname Manong Derrick, is a Filipino basketball coach who is currently the coach of the De La Salle Green Archers in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP). He coached several teams in the UAAP, PBA, and PBL. Career Playing career Collegiate career Pumaren was a member of the UE Red Warriors 1978 championship team. Manny Paner
Manuel Paner (born May 17, 1949), better known as Manny Paner, is a Filipino retired professional basketball player. Player profile Paner was born in Cebu City, Philippines. During his prime, he was known for his strong rebounding, defense and deadly hook shot. At a mere 6'2", he would play center and sometimes defend the opposing team's American imports. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Paner played for the San Miguel Braves in the MICAA, along with other Cebuano cagers Rosalio Martirez and Alejandrito Miego, to a name of few. During the PBA's inaugural season in 1975, he was the center in the league's first Mythical Team, and in 1978, he left Royal Tru-Orange to sign with Great Taste what was then the league's biggest contract that paid him a whopping Php8,000 a month. Rufus D. Harris is a retired American professional basketball player. He was the America East Conference co-Player of the Year as a senior in 1979–80 while playing for the University of Maine. After graduating, Harris was selected in the 1980 NBA draft by the Boston Celtics, although he never played in the National Basketball Association. Instead, he carved a professional career in both the Continental Basketball Association and international leagues. Harris played from 1980 to 1983 in the CBA, for the Maine Lumberjacks and Lancaster Lightning. In 88 CBA games he averaged 18.8 points per game. Alvin Teng
Alvin L. Teng (born March 4, 1965) is a retired Filipino professional basketball player who spent 14 seasons in the PBA, mostly with the San Miguel Beermen. Collegiate career A native of Davao, he was a latebloomer in basketball, having only started in 1983 while playing for the Rizal Memorial College in his hometown. After a year with the RMC, Alvin enrolled at the Harvardian University in Davao, where he also played for the school team. He soon made it to a selection of Davaoeños which participated in the PABL Founder's Cup. Thus was his first taste of commercial ball-playing in the Big City. While playing for the All-Stars, Alvin was spotted by Arellano team manager and then PABL president Peter Cayco and was promptly recruited to the Flaming Arrows' bench.
